I have a Mac on snow leopard running virtual box 4.3.40. I have managed to install the latest Lubuntu, but can’t get the guest additions to work, maybe because the guest editions on 4.3.40 are too old?

A few months ago I tried installing Ubuntu and other Linux distros without any success at all, often freezing etc. I think it must of been due to the more complex GUI’s. however, the lxde Lubuntu runs fine, except for the guest additions, so my screen is tiny!

Any advice?

Are you trying to install GA via the host machine (your Mac)?

While I'm not on Mac I do run into issues sometimes trying to install GA from the host to the VM. At that point, I then manually download and install GA from within the VM and that usually works for me.

The way I tried was to go to 'devices' and then 'insert guest additions' in the menu bar.

How do I manually download them???

From within the VM, navigate to the downloads page and get the all supported platforms extension pack and install it from there.

Direct link

I went to that Direct link in the VirtualBox, but when trying to install, I got this error message:
