Installing HP 3500 Color Laserjet on home wireless network as my default printer

Have installed HP 3500 printer driver on iMac, but can't get iMac to recognize that the printer exists so I can select it as my default printer

OK - there is a difference between postscript network printers and non-postscript ones -- because the printing system on OS X (CUPS) is based on postscript. Your printer isn't a postscript printer, so you need a CUPS-capable driver to use the CUPS-provided standard network protocols. HP doesn't provide CUPS-capable drivers for non-postscript printers.
You will have to use a third-party CUPS driver for your printer. I suggest hpijs + foomatic + ghostscript:
