It did, but then when I synced with another iTunes library on my internal hard drive (as opposed to the library in my External HD) the taking up of space went away without the iOS moving away together with it.

if i try to sync it with the itunes library in my EHD, would the 5GB of taking up too much space come back?

iTunes > Preferences > Devices > Select the backup(s) and click "Delete Backup ..."

thanks. just making sure, so does installing iOS5 does not create 5GBs of taking-up-space in the iPhone as long as you delete all the backups?

I would like to update the other iPhone in the house this way.
