Before installing leopard just wanted to check the best way to do it. I'm mostly concerned about my pictures and music. I don;t have an external hard drive. What's the best way to install and preserve or retrieve files, photos, music etc?

You have two options: Upgrade or Archive & Install. Both will accomplish what you want; A & I will create a "Previous System" folder containing the previous OS, preserve all your apps & files, and otherwise present you with a clean OS. Upgrade simply overwrites/replaces system files in the existing System & Library folders (simplified, but that's the gist of it).

Right....so these choices will presumably be offered when I install right? Which of these is better for performance?

Ok...just tried installing. Clicked the 'restart' button and put in administrator password. The Mac rebooted but nothing happened. Isn't it supposed to automatically install after re-start? Any ideas?
