Hello,

I was planning on buying an SSD for my early 2009 Macbook Pro and doing a clean install of El Capitan. Problem is, my keyboard is somewhat damaged and the Control key behaves as if it's continuously pressed (I'm temporarily dealing with this by having the key disabled using Karabiner). For this reason, I will not be able to make my Mac boot up from a bootable flash drive as I intended (holding down the Alt key as the laptop starts does nothing, because it registers the Control key at the same time and the Alt-Ctrl combination doesn't work).
Since an external keyboard wouldn't do the job either, I was wondering whether there are other ways of installing the OS on an SSD, like for example by connecting the SSD externally at first and making it into a bootable drive so that when I place it inside the Mac I'll be able to install El Capitan directly from there? I don't know if that even makes sense, just wondering if there's a similar possible solution. If not, I'll clearly have to look into replacing my keyboard first, though I was hoping to avoid spending money on that process for now.

No idea. But it might be cheaper to sell as damaged and buy used one for a few bucks more. The 2009 should be found for little money.

But with a 8year old machine there can always go something kaputt. So i wouldn't invest more than $100

IIRC, you could download the installer to your current system, plug the new SSD in a USB enclosure and pop it in the system, format the SSD to HFS+, while running the installer on your current hard drive tell the installer that the install destination is the new SSD in the external, and fully install OS X directly to the external.

I don't mind investing a little more for an SSD, because even if my laptop dies, I'll most likely be able to use the drive elsewhere.

I was hoping for such a reply. Thanks. If anyone else could back it up, I'd appreciate it. Just to make sure before I make any further steps.
