My experience has been almost exactly the same as yours. I bought Windows 8 and Parallels primarily to run Quicken. The scaling issues with Quicken have been a real pain.
I have just bought a Surface Pro 3 as I support IT in a Windows environment, so I expect I will remove Parallels eventually and install Quicken on the Surface Pro instead.

I found the SP3 to be an awesome machine, I'm shocked at how portable it is. Its like toting around an iPad, but with the power of a laptop. Great computer.

Its slower then my rMBP, but that's somewhat understandable, quad core, faster CPU (GHz wise) and dGPU.

What tips do you have for performance and thermals? Thanks

Generally, you want to thermal at or very near minimum sink speed, in as tight as circle as is needed to core that particular thermal. Watch your vertical speed closely and listen to your audio variometer to adjust your angle of bank so that you remain in the thermal core as you gain altitude. :)

If and when I take up flying I will remember :)
