Installing windows with a CD

I'm about to try and install windows via bootcamp on my macbook pro (early 2011) for the first time. I've read a bit about it on various sites but couldn't seem to clarify a specific issue; if i have windows on a CD do i still need to use a flashdrive at any point in order to boot windows? also, would i still need a CD to burn onto at any point?
