Dude, this isn't about entitlement at all, it's about the fundamental right to privacy. If this concept is not as American as it gets, than I don't know what is.
Yeh. Great story. As I said, your choice at the Apple store may be ID or CYA later. Of course, you don't have a fundamental right to buy one according to your rules, but maybe if you persist, or keep going to different stores, you'll find a manager that will bend the rules for you.
I've heard about this before but also that you could go into an Apple store and pay cash for an Apple gift card, then buy the phone.
Every time I've bought anything at an Apple store since they have done away with cash registers and gone to the electronic checkout, they assume you are paying by credit card. You need to tell them upfront that you are paying with cash. Its BS. The last time, they scanned the item and I told them I was paying with cash. They had to void the item and hand me over to someone else.😡

*snip*.
You wan't privacy and you're buying an ipad? An ipad that can't be used without an itunes account? An itunes account that can't be used without a credit card? A credit card that is tracked and recorded for every purchase made?

I don't have a credit card tied to my iTunes account. Name, email sure, but no credit card. Keeps me from buying stuff spur of the moment...I use gift cards to keep spending in check.
