I don't see the point in watching blu-ray on the computer. I can understand it for burning purposes... well sort of. It's still about $20 per 25gb disc.

if you would have read, the main purpose is for connecting to large size TVs and watching it on there..thats what all the hype is about!

I'm confused. Don't Blu-Ray players connect to "Large Size" TV's like you want ?

lol because it defeats the purpose haha!

for me, i want a DIGITAL media bank, everything will be stored on a HD - this can easily be reached.. i also want to be able to use it as a computer, check emails, use IM, check MR... it will also serve as a media "converting" centre so that my laptop isnt as stressed, and i dont have to worry about when im leaving the house next with my laptop.. it could also do some folding for me (just thought of that haha)

thats a personal use though, im sure others have their reasons.

Sure sounds like you want a PS3.

I see the point in watching blu-ray on a computer. Someone who travels a lot or just doesn't want to own a TV. On any high def display or any size, the quality difference between blu-ray and DVD (as long as the blu-ray disc is encoded in H.264 or VC-1 video) is night and day. It's hard to look at a DVD on any display that isn't a standard def TV after viewing good blu-ray discs.

me neither. i don't care how much extra quality it adds. this Mac will never run windows ! haha. just something weird about it.

Really the only point (for me) is so you don't have to buy the same movie more than once. Of course the movie studios would rather everyone but the digital version. Especially with no price drops... All that profit....

Of course, for traveling, I'd never drag my blu-ray discs around. At 30-35$ a pop per movie, on an easily damageable media, they are staying right at home, safe in my library.

sorry but PS3 is fail

http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=92847

cant play all types of bluray discs.

Nothing that can be fixed with Software!!!

I did read somewhere where the PS3 might have some limitations, but compared to the NEW standalones. But the PS3 is also meant to be a game machine.

Back on track - I think these NetTops are cool, especially with all the video content available for FREE online (like Hulu).

I would love to see the new AppleTV be upgraded to an Ion/Atom chipset so it'll run cooler.

Just add Apps like Weather, Sports/NEW Updates, and games, and we are set to go...

Imagine playing a game on your iPhone/Touch, and continuing it on the big-screen with an AppleTV, with your iPhone/Touch as the wireless controller...

So maybe there is truth in Apple using the Atom processor?

I guess by Fall - in time for the holiday shopping season.

none of those except folding meet my specifications, they all need to be modified. also, do they void warranty?? can you install it yourself?? does it cost money??

seems like a waste of time to me.

Ahem. ;)

Depends what you mean by 'convert' I guess, but if you want transcoding, this is the app to get.

by converting i mean,
• put a DVD/BD in and convert it into whatever format i want
• take an mp4 file and convert it into anything i what
• take an mkv file and convert it into anything i want..
• ect.

can it do that??

New mini mac - Fail.. can't say its been worth the massive wait..

At least it didn't have an Atom processor. C2D was a better option.
And it has an Nvidia GPU, which is a vast improvement.

The Mini was never meant to be a desirable machine, just a functional one.

^^^

Yes, the Mini is a great value, especially with the dual-display and FW800 ports.

Here's the latest article on Atom NetTops and Atom All-In-Ones:

But again, Apple will probably use the Atom in AppleTV. Using an Atom in a Mac is just not the same experience as a Core 2 Duo.

Atom Based All-In-Ones are now available:

hopefully the atom will give it BluRay like capabilities for really good HD playback :) stupid P4

First of all, the $ goes before the number ;)

Second, blu-ray movies are in the $20 range these days. Even if you go to Fry's you'll be hard pressed to find a newer release above $25. Thats no different than DVD pricing at the very same point in its life. I was buying DVDs 10 years ago at the same $20-$25 that blu-ray discs currently sell for.

Third, if you actually owned blu-ray you'd know that they have anti-scratch coating. You'd have to be extremely negligent to be able to successfully scratch them. They're almost scratch proof. I've yet to receive a scratched blu-ray disc from Netflix, yet every DVD I've ever received from them (even way back in the beginning) looks like its been run on a grinder for a few minutes.

Forgot to quote this post.

Apple TV actually uses a Pentium M.

The only way to get blu-ray playback in the Apple TV would be for Apple to write software that takes advantage of the GPU. Even Core 2 Duos can't reliably decode blu-ray discs loaded with H.264 or VC-1 video.

Thats why the Apple TV is limited to 720p. All the video decoding is done on the CPU. The GeForce 7300 in the Apple TV is more than capable of decoding and playing blu-ray video. The problem is that Apple TV's software nor OS X support full hardware acceleration for video.
