A way to find the leaks?

I find this Intel rumour pretty unlikely, if for one the heat challenges they would face.

There will be a Mac OS X/86 in the labs (it came with NEXTSTEP and Rhapsody was multi-architecture too) and they will keep it alive because that is in many ways a smart move.

Maybe this is a way for Apple to find out the leaks. Leak different aspects of the story (e.g. timetable for minis to go over) to different people and see what happens in the press. Do it in a short period before th ereal announcement and sales will not plummet.

How long will it take these smaller developers to rewrite their code, and how many of them will actually do it?
Unless they really are doing some stuff really really wrong, it will go something like this.

1) Install newer version of Xcode that supports the "Intel" CPU (Xcode uses gcc after all an that fully supported Intel CPUs).
2) Double click their existing Xcode project.
3) Select a menu option to add "Intel" CPU target and/or enable fat output.
4) Click compile.
5) step 5, their is no step 5

:)
That's promising! :p

smokey screen

I like the idea this rumour has been initiated by Apple to gather the press before the year of HD kicks off with:

Quad Mac ( 2 x dual core)
40" HD screen
Price drops as the single 1.8 is finally scrapped.

Tomorrow we'll all be laughing at the thought of macs ever having 'intel inside' stickers

Anyone notice the latest fad expression that everyone seems to love using? Following a comment with "that being said..." or "having said that..."

as Forrest Gump once said, "That's all I have to say about that."

It's just a way of getting two opinions in one. ;)

Having said that, I think Apple must have something upbeat to announce tomorrow, rather than just what we've all read so far.

I will agree with you. Perhaps a demo of such "Intel Inside" machine running OS X

What would be funny & add years to many a ppl's lives is tomorrow Steve Jobs announcing rumors are just that, rumors - never to be true. This whole thread is gonna be searched & so many quotes will be pulled into other threads of "I told you so", "I didnt say that, yes you did", lol.

An Intel/AMD transition in a Mac would hurt Apple's sales to the Education market, not to mention GenenTech & other science corporations. Apple may have just enough money to survive warranty disputes for 2 years of all their existing products - but what would happen to their bottom line of existing products with 3 yrs of AppleCare (when hardly any replacement hardware exists)??

Another thought, does anyone know what happened, or how Steve Jobs acted when just before he was ousted out of Apple back in the early '90s??

Many ppl have mentioned that this supposed Intel transition would hurt Apple & current sales would go the Titanic. I think only in the short term, then after 2 months - if this rumor is true - Macs would be eaten up like hotcakes; people trying to get in on the last Mac (iMac/PowerMac/PowerBook/iBook) PPC based system ever produced!! Then eBay prices would skyrocket on those trying to also purchase collectors items fearing Apple would go under.

Steve Jobs has brought a lot of good things to Apple. Macintosh, iMac, PowerBook, OS X, iPod & iTunes just to name a few of world renowned hits. He is the soul of this company with many good colleagues that are probably his closest friends.

I'd love to hear him say " If I got a dollar for everytime an article or someone said that Apple is going to Intel cpu's; I'd rather be dead, or ; it aint gonna happen as long as I'm CEO!" That would be a WWDC to save to DVD an archive forever.

Same story with the science community. You need stability. Huge data sets makes transitions from one program to another very difficult. Most dept tweaks existent programs to fit their needs. IMHO, if Apple changes system again most of the science community will be gone.

Exactly. My Mac user professors are shaky about upgrading to Tiger because they are afraid of the transition. An architecture switch would be disastrous.

Same article is also on Yahoo

post # 666 uhh how evil that seems

Acutally, scholars found they had it wrong the whole time.

The number of the beast is acutally 616, not 666..so you have nothing to worry about

They found a new part of the New Testament. :D

Same with my professors when I told them that I got Tiger. They just risk loosing any of their pro apps. Especially Quark, which seems to buggy a bit already on Panther.

who cares what they use as long as the software runs? I am sure they wouldn't go to intel if the software didnt run
Intel isthe best chip company
why are people opposed to that?

It is about time this happened, esp since PPC cant get to 3ghz after years... Moore's law has been proven wrong by IBM

Chance of nothing on this at keynote?

It occurs to me that even if this is true, secrecy may still be important for Apple. The plan may have been to let only SOME developers--with signed NDAs--in on the change this early. It may not have ever been intended to be public now, and not be ANY part of the keynote.

Then it's a question of whether Steve caves in to pressure to confirm or deny, and changes his keynote for that purpose. He might decide that remaining UNconfirmed is the way to go for a little longer. Or that discussing it at all will take away from other things he still wants to present.

So it's possible we won't get any official word for a while. Only possible.

It's also possible Steven will make a joke about the whole thing, say flat-out that Apple's not going to Intel, and move on!

I tend to think he'll be saying the opposite, though, scary as it sounds.

Well, but on the other side of the coin, the New York Times is standing on the WSJ/C|Net side...*and* they claim to have exec reports from *today* (as opposed to just the older reports C|Net claimed to have)....

Seems like a lot of big guns coming out and saying that this is true!

Oy vey, it's made it to the Yahoo! homepage:

well, i guess this also confirms that Intel = x86, as it clearly states abandoning the PPC commitment with Motorola and IBM.

No, Apple will most likely use IA-64 (iTanium)

I'm going to bet on a demo a Dual-Dual-core Mac vs. a Pentium system.

Try IA-64 iTanium. Apple is certainly not going to use the 25 year old x86 technology, but most likely will scoop up the highly proprietary IA-64 Itanium. This is not x86 compatible and brand new (true) 64 bit iron. IA-64 will lock down the Mac platform from cloners and provide a huge performace boost for Macs!

Itanium is going nowhere.

Not Pentium, not Itanium, but Cell!

Not going to the WWDC this year :-(

How many times does it have to be repeated that Cell is a niche product and NOT a viable alternative to PPC?

I think it would AWESOME if Steve got up and introduced Dual Core PowerMac G5's and Powerbook G5's and then after he was done said...well we are going to replace this extremely slow crap in 2 years or less with the newer and higher tech x86 Intel.

People can say what they want about all of this, but I will tell you exactly the reason that I don't think a word will be said about it until they are ready to show a computer running it. Just think for a second. If Steve would have announced the G5 project a year or two in advance... Would they have sold a single PowerMac G4??? Ok, maybe a few for people that HAD TO have them, that would have been IT. People would have stayed away in droves. Realize if Apple does this, they are going to LOOSE a lot of profit for at least the next two years. I would sell my stocks.

I would imagine as well that Apple will be put on "death watch" again once this announcement is made. Just you watch.

Last, if Apple makes essentially a "PC" they better hope that Longhorn does not meet or exceed Mac OSX in ease of use, speed or experience, because if it does and Apple is sitting there with a copy-cat computer running an equal OS and trying to charge the prices they will want...It is all over.....

I LOVE Apple...but I think a switch to what has always been known as the PC leaves me to say this...I am afraid the Fat Lady is starting to warm up and just the iPod and iTunes are not going to quiet her down.

The Macintosh as we know it is dead. Replaced by a run of the mill PC running Mac OS X.
