Sweet Melissa! If the 13" comes stock with an SB i5 and improved resolution, I will be delighted and placing my order asap! The question is...will the go backwards or laterally to the SB incorporated graphics or remove the ODD and go dedicated. That...is the question

Exactly. I'll be buying one in both cases :)

I'm not sure. I think it'll still be missing some things I want, so I may wait it out another year or two.

Waiting for technology is kinda silly, there's always something new around the bend. Buy it when you want/need it. Or in Apple's case, right after it updates a product, since you're stuck with those specs for at least 6 months to a year.

Can I assume the 'i5 to Sandy bridge i5' is the equivalent to 'core duo to core 2 duo'?

I may sell my mid '09 15" to get the 13" if the resolution is bummed up to 1440x900. I could probably break even on price quite easily.

Whilst I'd want to buy a new machine when every new MBP is released, I can't afford to. So if I need a machine to last for several years I want it to have features that will mean I still have a good machine in 3-5 years. If the new MBP is missing things like USB 3, then it'd be missing technology already available that I know I'd want well within the period of owning the machine.

The new processors and SATA III aren't the only thing I'm looking for in the new machines.

i5/i7 confusion

I'm focusing on the 13" as it's the model most overdue for a performance boost. Jobs kept going with the C2D part of the 13" MBP's because there wasn't a good Nehalem alternative that wasn't a battery hog. Sandy Bridge now has proper 25 W TDP parts that should slot right in.

i7-2629M (2.1 GHz)
i7-2649M (2.3 GHz)

Both of them are 25 W processors with Core i7 branding, with no lower product at 25 W. That creates a weird situation in which the lowest spec'ed 13" could have an i7 while the lowest spec'ed 15" could have an i5 even though this i5 may be faster and have better integrated graphics. Those parts are:

i5-2520 (2.5 GHz)
i7-2620 (2.7 GHz)
i7-2720QM (2.2 GHz, 45 W, probably BTO)

Buyers will look at the clock speed and judge from there, but the i5/i7 mixup could make things a little confusing for some.

Doesn't/didn't sandy bridge have some sort of major flaw?

Are these chips intel is selling Apple the flawed chipsets or the have they fixed the problem?

All - Repeating ALL - chips have bugs. In the case of the Sandy Bridge series the SATA bug is in the support chip and only affects the SATA 2 ports. If the SATA 2 ports aren't used there is no problem. Honestly I don't know why people don't grasp this.

To put it simply Apple isn't going to ship laptops using ports that are known to have problems. This is easily addressed by using the SATA ports. What is interesting here is that everybody gets worked up over the SATA bug but completely ignore other bugs in the Sandy Bridge series.

Does anybody give a ****ing damn about theses dual cores? Seriously. Apple already skipped one complete chipset with quadcores for desktop (meant notebooks here..) while others used them (e.g. dell, hp, lenovo)

On thursday apple will charge an additional price of 50% for 50% less cores?

**** yourself, Jobs.

sorry for the double post.

You should have just apologized for the worthless first one.

Goodbye 1st generation MacBook Pro.

You shall never toast my bread anymore. (First gen heat issues)
You shall never whine at me (First gen whine issues)
I shall have a laptop with battery (Mine has no battery anymore)
I shall have a 64-bit machine (Only 32 bit Macbook Pro apple has built)

I think if people have been waiting for an upgrade THIS IS the perfect time to do so!

After Antennagate bit me, I'll wait till they debug this new model.

It's too much work to setup a new laptop, "move into it" only to have nothing but problems, big or small.

Keeping 25W in the 13inch would make sense but it's about 70 dollars more than the current P8600 (2.4ghz)

P8600 - $241
P8800 - $241
i5-2520M -$225
i7-2629M -$311
I7-2649M -$346

While these are consumer prices, they'll probably mirror in the amount they different between each other in OEM for the most part.

i7-2629M is slower only because the multiplier is set to 21x, vs the i5's 25x. It would be awesome if you could tweak that, or at least the Turbo setting. My i7 2600K purrs at 5+ghz no problem, Sandy Bridge is awesome for its easy and cool OCing.

The prices of the P8600 would have changed since Apple last refreshed the MBPs. Also prices of other components would change, so the price of the new CPU hopefully shouldn't be an issue for Apple.

But of course we all know that Apple never uses the latest up-to-date technology since they don't make"real"computers anymore....

Oh wait....

What is it with all the Dual Core hating ?

Seriously, why does everybody want QuadCores ? They eat more power and result in less battery life, which i find more important than some cpu power on a laptop.

Modern DualCores are still plenty powerful, most Software isnt even using DualCores properly, let alone Quad Cores. If you do stuff that really requires Quad Cores (like Rendering, Video Editing, Gaming) you shouldnt do that stuff on a Laptop in the first place... Get the right tools for the job, a Laptop should not be your Desktop replacement.

Seems like some people just want the latest and greatest without any valid reason going for it.

Yeah, all the rubbish Windows Laptop got QuadCores by now, but they also run out of battery juice after 3 hours max..I dont want that!

Errmmm...

Laptops ARE desktop replacements just like tablets are becoming laptop replacements :)

It is 2011!
