The bargain value for money none upgradable multi thousand pound / dollar Mac... so 16 GB limit for professional laptops from Apple, and a very expensive none upgradable professional desktop.
Wonder how long it will be before overheating reports appear?

I'm not hitting on a finally updated professional machine, it's just Apples usual money gouging way of doing it... by making it none upgradable.. makes you wonder just how much they'll charge for the new modular machine?

I love the iMac Pro but I wonder what the hardware refresh rate will be for the iMac Pro. Nobody is doing to pay $4999 for an iMac Pro 2018 technology in 2025 using only 8 core CPUs and only 32 GB of RAM that isn't upgradable. Apple needs to come out with an update every 18 months at a minimum.

Are these just rebranded (i9) housefires that were just released?
no i9 doesnt support things that xeon does.

The Xeon W series share the same architecture as the Skylake Core i7 and Core i9 series CPUs. The differences will be in the supporting chipset, which will add ECC memory support.

1% of Apple users will actually be able to use the processing power of the iMac Pro; 10% of Apple (desktop) users will buy it as a trophy. And no, I'm not stating a "fact"; just my own speculation.

Which is why Apple generally ignored the Mac Pro - it's not worth the investment based on how few people would buy it even if Apple had kept it up to date. I think the only reason they're going forward with a new model now is as a "trophy project" to cap the Mac Line off with. If they're fortunate, enough people will buy it (either as a work machine or as a "trophy") to provide a semi-descent ROI or we'll be back to Square One again where the mMP sits neglected.

Given the consensus of the iMac, I'm going to stick to the 8-core. Hoping it'll run cooler than the greater number of cores, is that accurate?

December can't come soon enough. My workflow is so slow, but I don't want to get anything other than the iMac Pro.

Most likely up it to 64GB RAM and leave everything else as it is. Not sure I will up the VRAM like I would usually. 8GB seems plenty and I imagine the 16GB VRAM will be a lot more... hoping Apple releases prices and pre-order soon... obviously it'll be more like December... 4 months to go...
You & I seem to think exactly alike. Looking at the 8C, 64GB, undecided on the GPU & HD, probably go 1 or 2 TB SSD, but TBD.

True, I’m just happy I fall in your 1%. Still debating on the SSD.

Its called a hackintosh. I build them all the time.

People have been actually pricing similar components including the monitor for building a PC. I think CNET already brought up the PC side shortfall, though I question that given the Apple tax.

Apple should make headless Macs and displays instead of all-in-ones like iMac, which are a brutal environmental aggression when after seven years the CPU is no longer supported by new macOS versions, yet displays may last for more than 20 years.

So, you want to still be using that 20 year old CRT that was available in 1997? LOL. Apple leads all tech in recycling, so when you finally need to give up on an iMac, they will see that it is recycled properly, for free! I have a ten year old iMac that is running as smooth as day one and still works great in the kitchen for basic web surfing and watching videos while I cook.

So, these are going to have desktop graphics cards to match their Xeon processors, right?

I understand they're AMD "pro vega" but GPU branding nomenclature seems to have eroded beyond recognition.

What are YOU smoking? Apple is in the disposable tech business. This is why they've let their PRO business languish.
Providing long lasting high powered computers is no longer they're concern.

HELLO! THEY'RE MAINLY A DISPOSABLE PHONE MANUFACTURER NOW! The Mac was afterthought since Mavericks!

last i checked OSX still has a 32-core limit, so that rules out that 18-core right away since it would be 36 cores with hyperthreading.

I wonder about the fan noise.

I wonder if it can rotate completely forward so we can use the back like a Benihana grill.;)
[doublepost=1504043552][/doublepost]
Also, for that amount of money, they should include 2 hdmi inputs on the back of the monitor.

For $5K, aim higher buddy.

For that amount of money, they should include 2 HDMI ports on the back and throw in a large-screen 4K TV hooked to one of them.;)

Considering the inclusion of a Secure Enclave with an ARM coprocessor I think it is obvious that the iMac Pro will be the first Mac supporting Face ID.

But I hear TouchID will be moved to the back. Yet that's where the Benihana grill is too, so I don't know how that can work. Maybe some kind of asbestos dongle (proprietary & sold separately of course).;)

Well that's 1113 of the 4999 already accounted for. Looks like it'll do nicely and we'll just need to spec up the other components. Roll on December

The price is OK. The form factor is not. They just won't give up trying to market non-modular Macs in the pro segment. They didn't have enough with the cylinder failure. Marketing unserviceable boxes is so tempting (benefit-wise) that they insist.

I get that Apple and likely most buyers may not want to upgrade the screen, or CPU, or maybe even video card (they'll likely just buy a new machine)... but I can easily see how someone will start with 32 or 64 GB RAM then want to upgrade later, if required.

You have to get informed, read about their award winning recycling program. Then read up about how well the MacBook pro laptops have been selling and the incredible pro macs that are coming out this year and next.

I'm just waiting for that guy who thinks they can build a better PC
Its called a hackintosh. I build them all the time.
Try finding all equivalent components for a price lower than $4999.

Rules:
SSD speeds and sizes must match or be bigger/faster
Screen must be equal size, resolution, colour gamut support and brightness or better
CPU and GPU must perform equally as well or better for the same type of tasks
RAM must be as fast or faster and match or be bigger in size
You must include everything from equivalently performing WiFi, bluetooth and sound cards.
A mother board with thunderbolt 3 support and equally as many or more number of TB3 ports.
Motherboard must support 10Gbp ethernet.
Motherboard must support equally as fast USB ports or better and have as many or more USB ports.
Similar keyboard & mouse

I probably left some things out of that list, but I can almost guarantee that you will not be able to match the iMac Pro.
