I have been noticing that my machine will not go to sleep at the time its automatically set to do so (45 minutes). It will go to sleep fine on command though.

The iMac will kill the display at the time interval set, but not the hard drive.

I did for the heck of it try a permissions repair with no success as well as a reboot. I do not have a date when this started happening. Could this be tied to a recent update?

    Thanks.

Do you have any downloading applications that might be keeping it awake? Limewire, Azureus or any other torrent manager? These would keep it awake. I think things like folding@home and boinc might keep it awake too if you have those running.

    No, I don't.

Another thing to add is when the machine typically goes to sleep, the light on the front below the display flashes. Since this issue has developed, the light will go solid and stay solid.

    Sleep Mode Stopped

I noticed that my sleep mode no longer works since installing a Kensington wireless laser mouse. Would the wireless dongle prevent sleep mode from engaging?

    It's possible.

    Changed sleep behaviour

My iMac is my 4th Mac but as it's brand new I'm still learning.
I originally set the sleep settings to wake the system with a mouse click - the computer would 'wake' immediately and display the screen as it was before sleep. I recently enabled 'Allow power button to sleep the computer'. After doing this, and subsequently disabling it, the system now wakes as if it was rebooting. I want to have the iMac in 'shallow' sleep mode during the day and not have to wait for it wake from what appears to be a deep sleep every time I'm away from it for some time. I've tried setting the 'Sleep' settings to 'Never' but this has no effect. I would appreciate suggestions on restoring the original 'shallow' sleep behaviour.

Do you have a fax/printer that is set to receive incoming faxes on your iMac?

No I don't. My USB printer is connected to my Airport Express. At present only my Firewire backup drive is connected to the iMac.

Try unplugging the firewire drive and see if it resolves matters. Just to rule things out.
