leaning towards...

at the moment I've found an Apple iMac 20" Intel Core2Duo 2.66 GHz 2GB 320GB Boxed for £800. How's that sound and where's this "refurb" store?

stoopid is as stoopid asks.....

see, this is why we newbie and virgis get confused.
My current machine describes itself as
Dual 1GHZ Power PC G4
whereas these new-fangled thingies are described as
Intel Core2Duo 2.66 GHz
and i don't know what difference these specs would make to someone with just basic uses...light video work, constant music play, email/surf, offfice, filemaker sorta stuff - although I DO get a lot of beachballs.
I always thought that mine had a couple of 1ghz processors (thus totalling 2ghz) and thus could do more things at the same time...
is a core2duo the same thing....? better? apples and oranges? If ya don't know, I can't explain it to ya - kinda like acid???
too stoopid a question to ask??
or do I just smile, nod, buy, hope and blather a bunch o' bull to those even less informed that surround me, on the grounds that I will surely know more than they...?
or is that what y'all are doing?? - just a joke folks...
I do sincerely thank you, well most of you, for the help and feel-better-already with regards to my original question re my son's conversion to Mac'itude and hope to not outstay my welcome but I'd hate to ballsup this situation, y'know?
with bated breath

That's slightly wrong. You have Dual PPC G4 processors clocked at 1GHz each. There's two of them. But you don't exactly add them up to 2GHz. It doesn't work that way. The Intel Core 2 Duo processors have ONE chip with both cores clocked at 2.66Ghz. You have TWO chips with each clocked at 1GHz. To make it plain, even the cheapest Mac Mini will run circles around your PPC G4. The iMac will be plenty powerful, just make sure the graphics card is good enough for your son's gaming purposes. And the iMac or Mac Mini will not have many beachballs.

much clearer and comforting...

thanks,
is this
ATI Radeon HD 2600 with 256MB of GDDR3 Memory
a good enough card for gaming? (not online gaming)

Here's a further question. Does the OP's programs support the dual binaries, i.e., natively support PPC and intel chipsets? The intel processors do handily beat the power pc processors, but if you have to buy scads of new software to support it, it may be fool's bargain (Is there still a big rosetta performance hit?).

If you are getting beach balls, and if you have to buy new software to take full advantage of intel models, you may want to consider maxing the ram out in your existing system, that would be the cheapest way to upgrade.

yea but no but yeah but,,,

I know, I've given a lot of thought to the software issue but it's an inevitable process isn't it?
as for the video card, what would be the optimum and which number is it in the description that determines which part of the process for upgrading?

If I might ask...?

Good enough would just about sum it up. My teenagers have that card in their iMacs and most modern games seem to play OK for them. Its not stellar mind you.

what games do your kids play on their macs?

almost afraid to ask

For the last generation the 8800GS was the best (24" top end iMac). From this generation either the 130 or the 4850 are the best but since the 4850 has not been delivered yet, we won't know until benchamarks are in.

how tricky are they to swap out~?

refurb replenished?

The item I had my eye on at the apple refurb store has vanished. About how often do they get stuff... (how long is a piece of string)?
In other words, is it worth waiting around for a few days to see if another Apple iMac 20" Intel Core2Duo 2.66 GHz 2GB pops up, or just roll the ebay dice?

Around 2am.
