I agree with you 100% fundamentally. The issue I have is when peoples lack of knowledge leads people seeking facts for actual help in the wrong direction. Is it supposed to be okay just because the intention was to help? Is help good if it doesn't help and maybe even hurts the person asking for help?
I should also point out that if someone is swayed the wrong way it's partly their own fault for relying on forum answers rather than doing some research themselves. Then there is the fact that at least 40-50% of the questions here could be answered within 5 min on wiki or google.
I agree with the above statement, but I would like to add my 2 cents. Research is great, and when I picked up my Powerbook and needed help I did a lot of it. I thought I was an expert, but when I found this forum and started discussing my issues with other members the help I received was invaluable.

Delving deeper into understanding through discussion is a great thing. It helps us all understand things in a more cerebral way. I'm talking more about basic things like what pci slots are for etc.
Life in general should be balanced. Nothing wrong with reaching out to others but you also need a certain level of self reliance.
