Not only is AMD successfully competing against Intel but Mac desktops and tablets, Linux desktops, and Android tablets are competitors for PCs. Intel isn't winning.

Hey where is Intel's competitor to Apple's M1 and M2?
Subtract Linux desktops as they use x86 and Android Tablets--not competing at all with non-Mac PC users. Intel is losing not because of Apple, but AMD.

I'm not an expert but I think Apple didn't design your wife's machine to compete against your machine. Are they both in the same class? I think your wife's machine is Apple's starter base model for casual users and daily routine basic use. It's definitely not a workhorse nor a multimedia powerhouse. It is the M1 starter entry-level and stomps the competition in that class. The M1/M2 workhorse multimedia powerhouse iMac is anticipated soon.
Yes that would be good. However, I think the only advantage that the Mac Studio (is that a "multimedia powerhouse?") has over my iMac is the 6 Thunderbolt ports.

Okay for my use the latest 27" iMac (20.2) with an Intel i9 chip and a Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16GB is a very very much better machine than my wife's M1 24" iMac in all respects.
Since winter is coming your statement is likely true, your space heater will be very useful. In summer, not so much.

No tears shed for Intel. The writing has been on the wall for over a decade and they chose to milk a Windows monopoly instead of innovating.

Where “cut costs” actually means “increase profits while sales are lower”.

Nah winter is not coming but summer is and both the iMacs will be just fine over summer. The space heater is already turned off and put away.

This sucks a lot for those employees :(

Intel has really been floundering around the past several years. Hopefully they can get back on the right track. More competition is a good thing in the chip industry.

"Probably someone running around trying to optimize DOS on Gen 14 chips."
I routinely get a 15%-20% bump in performance Gen over Gen every year with Intel processors running PC-DOS 3.3, DR-DOS 4.0, MS-DOS 6.22, and believe it or not, OS/2 2.11... so for the love of all that is holy, Intel, don't fire the "optimize DOS" guy!

I willing to bet that this is because phones and tablets are replacing computers for most users and not due to quality/Windows OS.

Outside of work; I only use my iPhone and iPad w/ Magic Keyboard. I definitely do desire a new Macbook Pro + Studio Display but it's a want rather than a true necessity. Could easily buy one now, but I wouldn't gain much due to the phone/tablet fulfilling any and all needs.

All that said; M Series is a game changer and shows clear advantages over X86.

Windows 11 is pretty good, I'd honestly say since using Windows 95 to Windows 11 (skipping Windows 2000/NT) I'd say it was Microsoft's best yet/overall in every aspect. Even if it takes major queues in contextual menus such as right-clicking or tabs in Windows Explorer, their equivalent to Finder in 22H2 release; I'm still waiting for this btw).

Personally I'm better on Win11 than I am with the recent 2/3 macOS 11 releases, and I love the design of this HP EliteBook 840 G8/ZBook 14 Firefly G8 with option to use eGPU's.

I do fully agree with everything you've stated! More and more people have iPad's and use that as their secondary or primary machine outside of their work PC that they really should not be using as a personal computer. Most ppl actually and probably more still do this - if you factoring in possibilities to why PC sales have continually dropped quarter to quarter.

But this announcement doesn't come as a surprise considering Microsoft's ARM devkit annoucement seems to have shunned Intel.
