If Intel actually delivers on time they are going to be exciting again! Sure they will always use more power on x86 but it is still pretty impressive compared to when they were stuck on 14nm forever. Even 10nm has been a few more iterations than I would have preferred but the 12th gen chips with big little seem to deliver and at least be competitive and when they get to Intel 4 and beyond it might just be a game changer for them. Exciting times ahead.

Not if Intel rebuilds the Core micro-architecture. The Core micro-architecture introduced in 2006 was never meant for mobile or efficiency like Zen or M1.

Intel claims to have perf/w leadership with lunar lake and beyond and these are micro-architectures that are rumoured to greatly surpass Intel's past gens.

Apple dumped PPC in favour of Intel, giving absolutely zero ***** for all the reasons SJ eloquently gave in his legendary WWDC keynote.
However if Intel eventually beats Apple in all the metrics where Apple currently hold supreme dominance, I wonder if Apple would ever swallow their collective pride and go back to Intel.

I don't think Intel is even going to chase Apple as a customer. Intel is building chips for others.

Intel made improvements to 12th gen CPU but regressed where it matters more on iGPU that is not only worse than 11th gen Iris Xe but trails behind AMD by more than a third at 10W and almost half at 15W. Don't think Intel 4 alone is going to make up for that and there's also the issue of Intel sub-standard iGPU drivers. Lets see what they can fix in a year.

Depends on your definition of mobile I guess...

The Core architecture grew out of Intel's Pentium M (can you guess what the M stands for?) laptop chips after the Pentium 4s design was realized to be a dead end. Whole reason Apple switched to them was the performance per watt.

Despite Intel beating a dead horse to death the 12th gen chips are a step in the right direction. Sure they are not as efficient as M1/2 or AMD and x86 has its problems but the big little architecture has serious advantages. They have been able to address two problems with the same technology doing this. Under heavy load they still use a lot of power and produce a lot of heat but they perform. Under a light load battery life is a lot better than 11th gen.

AMD still heats up under heavy load and battery life is better being on 7/6nm but unless they do something like Intel has done they are going to hit a wall. Once Intel gets to Intel 4/7nm they are going to have the advantage of process node and architecture and the better their process node the better both will get in terms of heat and efficiency while still having excellent performance.

Intel still has a lot of room in process but right now is competitive using x86 give ‘‘em a few years and it is possible they could be dominant again. Only time will tell.

Intel is poorly executing on their Arc line of GPUs. They just took at $650 million writeoff of Optane. It seems that they are doing reasonably well on high-end CPUs but not well in other areas.
