Not keeping your data on your machine?? That makes no sense. I have drobo -and- a RAID5 nas -and- rotating fireproof safe hard drive backups -and- mozy backups so I'm covered for redundancy, but it makes no sense to run your primary data off of a drobo as it's very SLOW.

Now my primary machine is a mac pro, so for a macbook or MPB it may make more sense to have the external drive.

Keep in mind however that an SSD does NOT slow down as you fill it- that's one of the beauties, especially for a notebook.

Yeah if you have a Mac pro and multiple internal drives then thats different for us laptop-only individuals.

I don't have an optibay in my Macbook Pro, but I may consider the homebrew solution posted earlier. Anyway, external interfaces are robust enough for single and even raid configurations (eSata, FW800), so even though we have superfast SSDs such as the intel x25-m, it makes more sense to keep just the OS and Apps on the drive and keep the rest clean for additional updates or whatever else, and keep media on eSATA and FW800 drives. Backups reserved for USB. I work with more than than thirty gigs of images on a daily basis (cataloging) so the remaining space on my x25 would be eaten up quickly.

Unforutantely, I'm not even getting the fastest speed out of my machine. I have the Penryn Macbook Pro which only uses a 1.5 Gbps SATA interface.

Sigh. Oh well. This thing will be usable for years to come.

How is newegg for that? Id like to order an x25m now, but I dont want to be screwed by a price drop in 10 days.

NewEgg has been pretty good about these stuff; although their official statement is that they don't do that, if you ask nice enough they do it sometimes.

SATA is backwards compatible, and even the SSDs don't hit the 1.5Gb/s cap.

Oh yes they do. SATA I is 1.5Gbps theoretical which is around 192MB/s; realistically it's about two-thirds that, so yes SSDs are approaching if not about to exceed SATA II speeds.

I just came across this article:

http://vr-zone.com/forums/421608/intel-ssd-price-cut-on-april-26th.html

"Intel plans to cut the prices of their SSDs ranging from $50 to $100 this coming Monday on the 26th of April. This is their second price cut on SSDs just two months after they conducted their first price cut in early February. Intel 80GB X18-M and X25-M will see their prices dropped from $385 to $335 while 160GB versions will be lowered from $760 to $660. However, the prices of the SLC models remain unchanged at $410 for 32GB and $790 for the 64GB."

Yay!

Darn the E class i was hoping for the price drop. I actually got lucky one day at Newegg on my Intel M SSD the 80gb I got for 363. each. Hopefully they will get down to closer to the 300 hundred mark for folks. Guess we wait 5 more days to find out. Nice info thanks

i'm interested in getting the 160GB version, but damn it's still expensive even after the $100 price cut! guess i had to choose either corsair 128GB or intel X-18M

I don't know about the other SSD drives out there much but I will say the Intels are working great and very stable so far. Something to be said for that.

Corsair is decent, I think it is Samsung OEM. (same as Apple)

But nothing touches the Intels except the Vertex, and they are only close in one area. The Intel SSD is absolutely dominating the competition right now.

The big one that is needed is 4 cores if they can at least get us on a 4 core Laptop that would also serve us well and I agree make a machine that can handle two drives internally. Ripping my optical bay out was not a big deal but nice if that was setup nicely already for us and i agree having a DVD drive in there is worthless anymore. Heck put a movie on a 32gb thumb drive and also sell software that is on a thumb drive. There are alternatives to the DVD. Oh well guess we have a nice wish list for the future

I always thing of that! Making software on a thumb drive would be sooo much easier. I never ever use my optical drive anymore; I am thinking of taking it out for another hard drive.

I am looking to get an SSD. Is intel truly the fastest? People on other threads are saying the samsung or the new corsair is the best? I am confused on which to get....

Intel's the fastest in random read/write operations by a good margin over anyone. Samsung makes a very stable SSD but they cannot match the speed of Intel but they can match the reliability. Corsair hasn't been tested so I cannot speak on that and it sounds like you ran into a Corsair fanboy.

Intel is the obvious premium choice for those that need a basic boot drive which will present a lot of random reads and random writes.

The OCZ Vertex series has very fast sequential reads/writes but cannot match the Intel for random so for daily computing it won't be as fast.

or...

Or, I could just get a 500gb seagate momentus for a mere $90. Then I could feed a family of 4 by burning all the money I saved.

At this rate, it'll cost $150 for the 80gb by christmas.
Can't wait until the 160gb are around $300

Called, Newegg; couldn't get a full refund on the difference, but they did offer $50 back, which I believe is their maximum.

But, by then, we'd be looking at 320GB drives for $800, and some of us would still be stuck spending a ton on them :p
