Probably a noob question but I just ordered a new Mac Mini and I am wondering if I will be able to restore a TimeMachine back up running on my MacBook Pro from 2012 that does not support Big Sur. Also, will I be able to run office on the new Mac Mini? Probably should have asked this before ordering but it was quite spontaneous 😅

Don’t see why not. It’s just like migrating data from a iOS device running a older version of iOS to a newer model. All your files and compatible apps are going to be there unless there is a show stopping bug.

I also just ordered a new AS Mac Mini and started to think about this.

I’m currently running an 2013 iMac (catalina) and wondered of it is a good idea to restore from this backup (an install that has been running since 2008).

Even of it is possible, should I start fresh and go through the pain of getting my config back manually?

I ordered the new air and I’m going to migrate using Apple’s migration assistant during setup. Too much hassle for doing all those changes manually if I’m not sure it’s going to be a problem. In my ten years using macOS, haven’t really had a software problem because of it.

This question is absolutely valid. Your backup might be of a Mac OS X version before Big Sur, and M1 requires Big Sur to run.

Sorry, I also don't have the answer yet, please keep this thread updated.

I’m getting my m1 MBA soon. Has anyone successfully transfer from a USB 3.0 external drive with dongle? I hope it works when I got the mac...
