Intel plans to launch several new desktop processors in the third quarter of 2010 to replace some previous models, and will also reduce some CPU prices to boost demand, according to sources from motherboard makers.

In mid-July, will launch three processors including the six-core Core i7-970, priced at US$885; quad-core Core i5-760 with core frequencies of 2.8GHz and priced at US$205; and quad-core Core i5-870S for small form factor PCs and priced at US$351. All prices are in thousand-unit tray quantities.

Intel will launch the Pentium E5700 for US$75 in early August and Core i3-560, Pentium E6800 and Celeron E3500 at the end of the month with prices of US$138, US$86 and US$53, respectively.

At the end of August, Intel will also reduce its quad-core Core i7-950's price from US$562 to US$294.

Not sure what this means, if anything, for those waiting on an update to the MP.

Only the 970 is of any relevance and if the price is correct indicates that there will be no cheap 6 cores any time soon and that the W3500 processors are still very much the current line.

edit: missed the 950 is dropping to $294, which is the price of the W3530. I don't really see Apple having waited for this though.

Prices dropping certainly have no relevance for Apple; just look at the unchanged price for 15+ months on the current Mac Pro. I think Intel's announcement is more for the Dells, HPs, and Lenovos of the computer world.

Before now, has there been a price drop on the Nehalem Xeon CPU's used in the 2009 Mac Pro's? I thought they've remained pretty static.

This is great news! I'll have to wait a little longer to complete my HackPro, but maybe by then my rebates will come in from my NewEgg purchases and I can pull the trigger on the i7-950 for the same price I would have bought the 930 for later this month! Thanks for the heads up! :D
