So, this isn't news about desktop Ivy Bridge chips?

its news about mainstream desktop/laptop ivy bridge cpus that will be released around march/april 2012

----------

Yes, I guess I made a great decision when choosing to wait until 2012 for new Macbook Air. :)

Also a question to those that knows better:

Which one is/will be better, Ivy Bridge or Sandy Bridge?

umm, ivy bridge is next gen sandy bridge....

that is like saying whats better: ipad 1 or ipad 2

mobile first, then desktops...

Would this be on the upcoming MBPro refresh already in November, or will we have to wait for next years' model?

By the way, when is it most likely that the new model comes out? February next year?

So, this isn't news about desktop Ivy Bridge chips?

If I remember correctly, according to Intel's roadmap plans, mobile Ivy Bridge chipsets will debut first by spring '12, with desktop ones following suit towards the end of the year at the earliest, if not early '13.

Bring the quad-core Mac mini (with matte display) and the 600 g and 7-inch MacBook Air.

I saw some numbers earlier about the mobile / lower power chips would get something in the range of a 10% graphics performance increase, while desktop chips could get a "massive" 20-30% - this is compared to the HD3000. Are those numbers just plain wrong, or how can this be a "significant increase"? It's still worse then the 320M if you ask me :(

lowend and mainstream desktop ivy bridge will be out around q3 of 2012, performance and extreme desktop cpus, used in the iMac and Mac Pro won't be out until early 2013 most likely

just a spec bump for now...

Don't hold your breath on a MBP "refresh" this year--Apple is unlikely to update anything before the holidays.

Sure, it COULD happen, but historically it has not.

We'll probably see Ivy Bridge MBPs towards the end of the first quarter of 2012.

Exactly.

All one has to do for a "Reality Distortion Field" check is to peer back into recent memory around this same time last year regarding the Sandy Bridge MBP release: after some hopeful wishing/anticipation only a quiet spec bump was implemented instead in the then current 2010 MBP models. I think the safe bet here is that same thing will happen again, especially since we all know now that Ivy Bridge chipsets aren't ready to ship until March 2012 at the very earliest.

I was close...

Thanks for those extra details.

still waiting on High-End Sandy bridge Processors!!!!!!

eitherway, I am super excited for ivy bridge: thunderbolt, usb 3.0, pci-e 3.0, better energy efficiency in notebooks, faster all around, next gen intel HD graphics with directx 11 support, 3D transistors,

Uh.. why are you excited for PCI-E 3.0.. and the graphics? Integrated graphics are still horrid, and the Direct X version doesn't matter on Macs. Every fabrication shift = less energy...

how long until Ivy-Bridge extreme? thats what I am waiting on q1 2013?

"ivy-bridge extreme"? Are you just making things up now?

Gah, I wish my 4 yr old Dell can hold on until the next iMac refresh w/ these new CPUs.

If you need an iMac now, I'd get one. They were updated fairly recently, so there probably won't be a refresh for awhile, even after IB is introduced.

A four year old dell btw, should still be plenty fast for 95% of people ;P

Absolutely horrid analogy. The iPad 1 and 2 have significantly different hardware... iPad 1 is to iPad 2 as Penryn Intel Core 2 Duo is to a quad core Lynnfield i5.

Clock for clock, Ivy Bridge will be about 20% faster than Sandy. It's not a "next-gen Sandy-Bridge" (this makes no sense), it's a die shrink of Sandy with a few tweaks and additions to the core that didn't make it into Sandy Bridge due to time, among other things.

Can't wait for those "ultra-high" displays.

They'll most likely be as expensive as LCDs were when they came out.... $4,000 for a 22" display =/

I am excited for Pci-E 3.0 for desktops. Yea, Integrated graphics are horrid but that is what most consumers have unfortunately, however, intels integrated graphics have been getting better, like ivy bridge makes them 60% faster with more technologies supported.

By Ivy Bridge Extreme I meant what ever Ivy Bridge Chip is going to replace Sandy Bridge Extreme

Sure your analogy makes more sense, but that's no the point, the person asked: what is better "ivy bridge or sandy bridge" I was just making sure it was clear that Ivy Bridge is replacing sandy bridge and is better in every way

Same here.

I upgrade/by a new Mac based on a simple principle:

If the computer waits for me to make the next entry/move etc. I am still good and the processing speed is adequate.

Once I catch up and have to wait for the computer to do its thing it's time to get the fastest model.

So far it has always taken me about 3 years to catch up in speed, but I am already there now and waiting.

But, since I want a MacBook AIR/pro without a drive etc. I'll wait.

Wouldn't mind if they made a 21 inch BookPro:)

ur crazy wanting a 21 inch ntoebook

Drivers are where Intel is lacking. I have encountered Internet Explorer 9's hardware acceleration hanging on Intel IGPs. AMD shines when their Catalyst package encompasses all their discrete GPUs and fGPUs sets. Ivy Bridge is going to be an advancement in hardware but it is the commitment to drivers that I find lacking.

It is also nice to see the enthusiast K Series drop form a 95W TDP to a reported 77W. Ivy Bridge, Trinity, and the approaching $1/GB on SSDs is going to make 2012 very interesting.

I personally desire PCI-Express 3.0 but there is not any hardware for it, yet. Take a look at Intel trying to get that out on Sandy Bridge-E. There is nothing to test it against.

I used to think better of you.

I'm hoping the numbers you mentioned are not correct. I am certainly hoping for a more substantive improvement in graphics performance in my next MBA.

>implying I would ever use IE9 on my computer

I get paid for support. I do not get paid to switch someone's browser when unnecessary. I would go back to Firefox but I just have too many Chrome extensions.

Ok. At least your customer was using the latest version.

They are Vista machines but then again the client is a cheapskate unless something is seriously wrong with them. At least they ordered a nice laser MFP the last time. I managed to squeeze a Vostro 3555 in the last purchase order too.

Give me this thanks!
