I just did a quick scan of the pdf and didn't see the thickness, I might have missed it though. In pictures it looks very thick, and with a platter drive I'd have to assume it won't be anywhere near as thin as the ipad2. Seems like the portability of the ipad2 and some of the newer android tablets is contributing greatly to their success and I'm not sure how popular a chunky tablet will be in today's era of sleekness. I could understand and possibly accept a chunky windows 7 tablet, but a chunky ios or android tablet has the seal of death on it IMO.

To put it mildly, the iPad is to thick for my taste, and the iPad 2 is acceptable. The iPad 2 should have been one smart cover thinner.

Other tablets range from acceptable to ridiculously thick lol

Actually, mobile devices do often use HDDs if they want to store a lot.

Back in the early 2000s, a lot of us used tiny drives in our PDAs' CF expansion slot.

A modern mini hard drive can use as little power as Flash memory and it's got far larger capacity. Onboard sensors prevent damage from G-forces. About the only downside they have is their usual inability to work above 10,000 feet.

Heck, Apple's harddrive-based iPod Classic has been on the market for a decade.

That's true but there are countless incidences of people dropping there HD based devices and losing every thing, although dropping the iPad 2 is almost guaranteed to break your screen as apposed to losing data.

Yep, it also depends on the HD quality and how far it's dropped.

A good modern mobile HD has an accelerometer and detects when it's being dropped, parking its heads in a safety area so no damage occurs.

Of course, dropping anything from high enough is going to smash it :)

But if someone needs lots of storage for say, dozens or hundreds of movies, then they have no choice right now. It's a HD or nothing.

PS. Love my Jeep Commander Overland.
