A family member started getting notifications on their Macbook Pro saying: "Detected: Trojan_BO8DF8310... from updates-macos.com MAC scan required" and also "System Mac OS is infected! from updates-macos.com Choose an action to restore the system".

How the scam probably works:

They create a website with SEO that would interest the largest group of people, then when they arrive to the site, barrage them with random "popups" to the point where they're quickly closing popups and eventually disregard what is being said. Insert a custom request to receive notifications from the site and voila, they can feed you whatever spam they want directly to your notification area! Clever.

The solution/ fix is to simply go into MacOS Settings, Notifications, find "updates-macos.com" and disable the notifications from it.

I'm documenting this in case someone else runs into it and is searching for a solution.

I have all notifications from Safari blocked, but that's because I rarely use Safari.

The links given above by bogdanw are very useful, especially the first one.
