before i say anything, i know that AT&T reps sometimes don't know what they are talking about, but i would still like to bring this up.

i was talking about data plans on phones. We were talking about which phones required data plans and the prices of data plans. He says, "Until the 10th of next month, the iPhone will be the only phone that requires a data plan." I don't think this is true, but its weird how the 10th is the day after the rumored iPod event, and that he didn't try to hide the information. He just said it like it was already announced or something.

Again, i dont think it'll happen, but its interesting nonetheless

Yeah, I would say that he/she is either making up crap, or you misunderstood what they were attempting to say. Selling Blackberrys without data plans would be hilarious.

Not so long ago it was pretty common... when the Pearl came out, it was genuinely popular for its looks more than its e-mail, and there were lots of people who used them without data. Things change, though. As for the rep, probably making stuff up like CSRs do, but....

Yes while dumb to use a blackberry without the data plan I know many people who do with T-mo and ATT ones as they have Wifi on them.

    It's not unheard of.

You think the rep was talking about THIS

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Mobile/7A341)

If the "THIS" is the same thing as the Newsweek article above then yes. My dad and friend both annoyingly have a BB Curve without a data plan or WiFi. It irritates me to see such a capable smartphone hindered by the fact that it can't access the internet whatsoever.

I heard they are now requiring data plans for blackberries. A friend's dad just got one and they told him he had to get it. However, he fought with them about it and got away with not having it. So they're enforcing it, but not as hard as the iPhone data plan.

As others have said this is an at&t decision.

They probably chose the 10th because it's something to do with billing cycles and new phone purchases.

While I was working there the iPhone activation system made you choose either consumer or enterprise at the time of activation or your couldn't go forward.

While Blackberry and other smart phones you didn't HAVE to put a data package on them, but it was always strongly encouraged. In my experience 95% of the people buying Blackberry needed a data package anyway. As another note, the Blackberry internet and email wouldn't work without the data package.

In other words we want to milk our customers for as much money as we can get out of them monthly :D
We're not competend enough to make MMS and tethering work for the iphone. We're too busy rejecting many apps that are put up for approval on the appstore so we dont have much time to improve our service and features.
    Thanks for your support.
And dont forget the contract you signed for that new shiny iphone. We own you for the next 2 years :D

I bet AT&T is "competent" enough to spell "competent" correctly.

Most of the smartphones AT&T sells now are labelled as "requiring a data plan," but it is misleading. You can cancel the data plan at any time once you get the phone. The iPhone is probably the only smartphone that doesn't give you that option, so in that sense, the rep you talked to is correct.

Yean, thanks for the reminder. :)

You can get the phone with no data plan to begin with by telling the AT&T rep you don't need a mail-in rebate. Or you can take a chance, get the data plan and mail in your rebate request, and cancel the data plan as soon as you receive the rebate. Depending upon how soon you get the cheque mailed in, you may be able to save more money. :)
