I installed a 500 gb Maxtor SATA drive with 3.0 Gb interface in my dual 2.0 G5. OSX 10.4.7. 2 GB RAM. For a month it worked fine, really fast, but then it slowed down by a factor of at least 10.

I mean REALLY slow. There are intermittent periods (brief) where it resumes at normal speed.

    I checked permissions. fine.
I verified it with the disk utility. fine.
    Checked SMART. Fine.
It has 20% space left on it.

I am trying to run DiskWarrior on it but it keeps stopping. It doesn't give an error message.. it just stops. When I 'graph' it in DW it says 31% of the directory is not optimized. But it never gets to optimizing it.

EDIT: It does not make any funny noises.. other than you can hear it not going fast if that makes sense... just sorta clunking along (softly) versus the fast stacatto sounds drives make when they are going normally and reading and writing.

And it is backed up on an external drive that I am now running off of. Fortunately. Still for a new drive who wants these problems?
