I'm sure this question has been asked before..
I was replacing my hard drive in my 15" MBP unibody, and during the swap, the hard drive fell out of the computer and split the ribbon cable in half.
Against knowing better, I attempted to boot the machine to see if it still works. I'm hoping I didn't fry the on-board connector somehow.
In the mean time, I have been using my HDD in a SATA->USB enclosure externally, so I know the drive is still good.
I purchased a replacement cable from Amazon and when it arrived, I tried it with my hard drive. The hard drive had power and was spinning, but there was no data; it wasn't recognized as a connected drive.
Looking at the replacement HDD cable, I noticed that two pins on the motherboard connection side appeared to be missing. Check out this picture (bottom pin on the left, second to bottom pin on the right).
I can't find a data sheet for this part to see if those are real pins or the cable is normal. I might just return it and get a new one anyway.
What's the likelihood that it's broken on the motherboard side?
