Just the other day all was fine, I imported a audio disk to iTunes, then went to burn one and I could not get a cd to mount.
Crazy thing I am able to Burn a DVD.

My Drive will not recognize and CD/CDR.

Has anyone have any Ideas???

I am running:
MacPro 2.66
OSX 10.4.8

Better late than never! The cd laser section has crapped out! The drive needs to be repaired (if under warranty ) you have to ship it to Pioneer in California call 1800 421 1404 if you are in the US. ) If it's under Apple warranty still, maybe Apple will just give you a new one. ( they freekin' should! )

I know this because I replaced my super loud Sony/NEC drive with a dvr112, It worked great for two months and did the same thing. So, I had to spend $8 shipping it to California to Have Pioneer chuck it in the bin and send me a replacement. If yours isn't covered anymore, just chuck it or stick it in an external drive and use it for dvd only.

Take care,
Mike

All mac pros are still under warranty...

I got my Mac Pro delivered last week and just took a look at the Superdrive in System Profiler;

OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A

No one in this thread has mentioned this drive, is it a new addition?

Are these drives supposed to be OK?

Okay, so my new Mac Pro arrived today, as did my Pioneer DVR112. I've been able to add it no probs, but when I press the eject key, both drive drawers open. The drive already in the Mac Pro looks identical (Apple sticker, but same DVR-112 reference number), but it doesn't have the "open" button where my additional one does: it looks as tho it's simply been removed.

So, is this the problem? As well as removing the front of the tray (as it's too tall to fit properly), so I need to remove the little button on the second drive? And if so, is it just a case of popping it out?

Or is this a software problem, and do I need to tell OSX that there's a new drive in there?

TIA
Phil

First thing I'd check would be the jumper settings. Set them both to "cable select". If that doesn't help, try "master" for the terminator and "slave" for the mid-ribbon drive.

Got my Mac Pro in May. It already came with the Pioneer drive.

yeah, it's starting to look as though Apple stopped using the Sony (NEC) drives fairly early.

The 111D drive I have is totally clogged with cigarette ash from its days in my old apartment in my G5 (I've since quit). The drive is having trouble ejecting, among other things.

Based on a report I read here about the 212D model, I'm upgrading to SATA:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductReview.aspx?Item=N82E16827129008

I'm positive it wont work in Windows XP, but I still have the original (crappy) sony drive so I'll just use that when I have to.

Also, there's still no word on whether this drive is bootable, which is discouraging. It's really hard for me to guess either way.

I'll post an xlr8 entry when I'm done. The one there on the 212d drive at present is really worthless.

So my replacement Mac Pro arrived on Friday, all is good and the superdrive isn't making the crazy sounds that the old one did.

It's the same Optiarc drive that I originally got. I believe it's a Sony?

Are there any firmware upgrades that anyone knows about for this drive?

How do I do this?

Its on the back of the drive unit it will be a little plastic clip that is on two mettle prongs look on the metal above these clips for the label to understand it. Also the label might be on the top of the drive.

Nice one! That's sorted it!!

Much appreciated,
Phil
