Internal mic not working in XP w/Bootcamp

I'm trying to get the internal mic on my penryn mbp working in XP pro under boot camp.

I went into the windows volume settings and maxed out the mic volume, but in ventrilo I'm barely audible. I went into some other sound utility that was running in my taskbar and enabled mic boost. This fixed the volume issue BUT my mic was constantly on/recording and playing in my headphones.

How do I get this working correctly?
