Here's the DSLReports Speed Test. That's what I use.

Some internet providers have their own programs. My provider (Internode) has it's own widget that displays bandwidth etc.

it might not be a program or a widget but check out speedtest.net its really good and accurate😀

Menumeters has a network monitor that measures your current internet speed if that's what you want. It also has various other meters that you might find handy.
