You do know that, on a mac you can go to Internet sharing and click from Ethernet and as long as you have a wireless card inside the computer, you can click as/to wifi.

Yes It Can Be Done!

Hi All,

I too was trying to connect to the internet via usb however found it a lot easier to just create a wireless ad hoc network and using the wireless feature on my itouch to connect to my work laptop via the wireless connection and connect to the internet. I know this isn't really addressing the main question of connecting it via the USB cable, but I thought this might be an easier solution if a solution is not available for connecting it via USB

I'll try my best to try and describe how I did it (without screen shots apologies)

Firstly you will need 2 network connections on your PC or laptop, 1 for ethernet which is the main connection to the internet, the other is a wireless connection.

You need to create an Ad-Hoc wireless network (google it) or use the instructions on this thread.

At this point a lot of tutorials stop here allowing your itouch to connect to the Ad-Hoc network but not allowing you to go any further in regards to surfing the net. The trick here is to share your ethernet connection to the newly created Ad-Hoc wireless network.

To do this you need to go into the properties of your LAN connection in control panel>network connections. Once in properties, click on the 'advanced' tab then tick the box which says 'allow other networks to connect through this computers internet connection' you will then have to select from a drop down menu which connection to SHARE IT WITH. Select the SSID you named when creating the Ad-Hoc wireless network and give it a few secs to kick in.

You should now be able to connect your itouch to the newly created wireless ad-hoc connection on your pc/laptop and surf the internet, access the apps store, facebook, mail, yada yada yada...

I do apolgoes for the brief instructions and lack of screenshots, links etc. I'm typing this on the fly at work.

Regards.

I finally did it!

I just did it! It can be done! even for the tech challenged! it took me like two hours of juggling with the options but i Finally did it! haha I'm connected to the internet with a broadband usb modem in my pc, then i used another usb dongle to create an ad hoc network and share my pc internet connection to my ipod, oh i'm using windows xp,and literally in the middle of nowhere that's why i have to use a broadband usb modem, via edge network... yes...it is SLOW. but it is better than nothing. i also just found out about remote djing itunes and it's cool! gonna use it for my upcoming birthday party!!! rawr!

one thing i have found is that when my ipod goes to auto lock mode it disconnects from the internet, why is this? there's something strange becasue on my pc the available networks menu shows the ad hoc network and i have to connect to it at the same time with the ipod in order to use the internet...am i doing something wrong? anyway it works after i do this, so i guess it's ok.

Good stuff mate, similar to how mines setup. Your itouch will lose its wireless connection whenever you put it on sleep mode or auto sleep mode, this can easily be disabled via the settings>general>auto-lock. I've got mine on never auto-lock and since its constantly charging via the usb cable, I believe there is no need to set an auto lock to save battery but of course this is a user preference.

wishing again for what OP asked for...

I realize all the reasons why it's difficult/impossible, but I too wish that a computer's internet access could be shared with an ipod touch over the USB connection.

Sharing my computer's wired connection by creating a local wifi network using its wireless card works fine, but for some reason this makes the wifi card much hotter than using it just to join an existing external network. So whenever I share internet access over wifi, my MBP starts to run hot and the fans come on loudly. Just gets really annoying after a while.

Wishes don't make it so. Especially when it comes to Apple actually implementing a rational solution. You're trapped and Apple isn't going to help you. Nor will they let any other developers help either. Such is the punishment you get for buying a product from such a company bent on implementing such despicable controls over your freedoms.

As for wifi, when the computer is using the network for only the apps you have running it has greater ability to control how much the radio is being used. When you set it up to act as a router it has to assume traffic may be coming/going at any moment so it remains powered up the whole time, consuming more power and generating heat in the process.

developing cydia package

I have your exact same idea! i'm actually developing a package for cydia, that can let you get internet tethering through your computer and on to an iPod Touch or iPad (Wi-Fi model) and i'm so glad someone see's what I see so thanks!

:)

I've been hoping someone would create a cydia app for that for the past two years. We don't have wifi at my job, and IT would kill me if I created an ad hoc server on my computer. When do you plan on having the app ready to go?

so i googled the exact same question and couldnt find an answer so i got on my mac and figured it out. heres how to do it.....
system preferences - sharing - internet sharing -
share your connection from - Ethernet
to computers using - airport
and then click the little check box on internet sharing. plug in your ipod and go to wireless connections and your laptop will be there. worked great for me. let me know how it goes. good luck

This works, but you need to have all the boxes on the left unchecked, then set up the 'from Ethernet' and 'to Airport', then check the 'internet sharing' box on the left. I got stuck because all the buttons on the right were dimmed until I unchecked all the boxes on the left.

I'm in temp housing on a army post in Germany, and they only allow a direct ethernet connection, no wireless routers (Imma hope that the MB Airport connection is subtle enough to avoid trouble). There are VERY FEW free hot-spots that I can find, they are very slow, what few hot spots are usually T-mobile paid (expensive). So my Touch has been out-of-action for the past week, so I was quite happy to figure this out. Immediately downloaded a bunch of German translation apps, got caught up on my news reading.

I'd also like to say that I certainly had to read thru a lot of irrelevant crap in this thread to get to the simple answer. Haven't read page 3 yet, so maybe more info there.

Reset router

I had to reset my wireless router today and am now having a heck of a time connecting my wireless gadgets to it now.
It seems the router renamed itself and now I am trying to figure out what went wrong.
I've reset it in the past and everything just connected right back up with no problems.
So far I have managed to get one notebook back online through the wifi.
Now I am working on my iPod Touch which will not recognize the router's new name and can't find the old name and just seems utterly useless.

It's late and I'm getting tired and just want to play a quick game on my iPod Touch that does not have an online version so I can't 'just use my computer'.

That is why I am here.
If my iPod connects to my computer through the USB port and updates and does transfers then why the heck can't it also access the internet through there as well?
I don't want a long technical answer about bilateral data transfer, ethernet ports or other crap that doesn't answer the following question.
I just want to know if it IS possible and if so how can I do it without purchasing some other equipment?

Thanks

If it works this is cool.

The way my head is pounding, I couldn't keep up after #4...

Thanks

I'll file this away until I'm over this head cold...

hi

I just stumbled over this thread, and maybe the OP and more active participants aren't reading this anymore, but I wanted to point out some valid reasons WHY I would want to do such a thing when, if my desktop has internet access, I could just use the desktop.

For one thing, I do have Wi-Fi and use it for my iPod touch when it works. The problem is my router sometimes decides it doesn't want to work for what reason, and/or my iPod decides it can't find the router EVEN WHEN I HOLD IT NEXT TO THE ROUTER. If I could connect to the internet w/ USB, that would at least work around that problem.

For another, and the main reason I searched for this in the first place, the game apps I play can't be used on my desktop. I've waited for ages for the other players in my games to make a move only to realize the Wi-Fi decided to die again. How do I check updates from my desktop? I don't--I just have to wait until the Wi-Fi decides to play nicely again.

Don't play those games? Well, s'pose I could, but that's no fun. Come on--I got the iPod so I could have something to fiddle with on the go that didn't saddle me with the bulk of an iPad or the contract of an iPhone. I get that sometimes I just have to put up with it, especially on the go, but it seems like a problem that doesn't have to exist.

Um, wifi routers are dirt cheap. Newegg's running a special on refurb Linksys E3000 routers. $49 and it's a pretty nice router. Save yourself the nonsense of putting up with a flaky router and get a new one.

The best router in the world wont help you after your son throws your iPhone in the toilet and now your wifi doesn't work. Not worth $150 to get it repaired. now I have to wait 4 months for my upgrade. Apple sucks.
