So,

I went to Apples GROUP DISCUSSION session today which apparently is the first selection process where they will hugely reduce the numbers.

This is how it went.

- Around 10 people in the room. 2 tables, 5 on each.

- We sit down, and introduce ourselves have a light chat.

- Then the coordinator, gives each group 5 sheets of paper which we have to distribute to each person FACE DOWN.

- After the coordinator explains the process, we turn over the sheets.

- On the sheet it said that I was an Apple manager and we had to come up with a COORPORATE COLOUR. The catch was that we couldnt come up with our own color. We had to follow the color it told us to folow on our sheets.
Basically each person in the group of 5 got different colors and we had to discuss and persuade each other so that YOUR color will be chosen. A short presentation was required at the end of about 2 minutes.

- We had 25 minutes to do the whole thing.

- I got YELLOW. Now that was tough but I somehow convinced or maybe FORCED it and I also ended up doing the presentation as well...I was abit lonely and I think they might have thought I came too strong or wasnt a TEAM PLAYER enough...

Ill hear results in a couple of days...I personally dont think I made it really. Presentation was abit crap.

apple here in northern california, and also microsoft's northern california campus, are great on the resume and highly regarded...read...they pay less for any position than most companies in silicon valley because they know that there will always be tons of people who would almost work for free for those companies

i hope you get the job, but don't be too aggressive on pay since apple has a ton of macheads willing to undercut you by 50%

i am going to make a guess here that since apple in silicon valley pays comparatively low, and silicon valley is a very pricey place to live, apple tokyo may do the same thing

Why did anyone have an incentive to accept anybody else's color?

Maybe the groups were seeking the most defensible color? So whoever could come up with the best argument about the color by default became the group's incentive?

EDIT: Reminds of the job interview where three intimidating suits asked me to tell them a riddle. Not only could I not think of any riddles on the spot, but I also looked much more thrown than I should have. Needless to say I didn't get the job!

True that. The starting pay here in Apple Japan is 5Million Yen per Year. I think that equates to around 47000-48000US$ A year PRE-tax. Its pretty average here in Japan for a graduate. I think. And TOKYO is a freakin pricey place to live!!!

my whole family is from tokyo...where a cup of coffee or orange juice is usually over 5 dollars a pop...ciggies are unmetionable, and some fast food joints for a hs graduate pay $20 us dollars an hour in tokyo ($42,000 usd) but that won't buy you squat over there

a 4 bdrm house in a mediocre neighborhood in tokyo, my grandad's place, was 7 mil usd and it's not that much of a house..my brother's house in norfolk VA similar in size, is just over 200,000 dollars usd for a comparison to a regular us housing region

If you're going to get a job at Microsoft, make sure it's in the MBU.

Not sure what you are talking about? I don't have exact figures on hand but prices are nowhere near what you are saying?

Cigarettes are cheaper here than in the US, UK or Australia. The average part time job at a fast food restaurant is 800-1200 yen (US$7-10) depending on the time (ie pay around midday is cheaper than at 10.00 pm), and coffee comes from anything around 300 yen ($2.60) but higher for larger sizes and some Starbucks-like 'designer' blends.

Some things are really expensive, other not - like in many countries, but Tokyo is a top 3 most expensive city overall, but you can live comfortably if you know where to eat and where to buy stuff - like in many countries

Any news yet?

Yeah, sorry to be annoying, but I second that.... I'm assuming that maybe you didn't make it, which in the case I am sincerely sorry that you did not, but other great alternatives are bound to come along, so don't kill yourself over it... but, anyways...

So, heh, can we hear what happened?
I'm not trying to make you dwell on if it was bad... I'm just genuinely interested. :)

I work for a laid back Silicon Valley tech-finance company. We expect people to dress for interviews as if they don't know this. Not wearing a suit or business attire is a pretty sure fire way to not get a second interview with our company.

When being offered the second interview we will often tell candidates that it's acceptable to come in business-casual.

I don't care who the company is-- even Apple (a customer of mine)-- this isn't the tech boom of the mid to late 90s when people took absolute pride in the absence of business attire.

You can never, in my opinion as someone who hires, go wrong by dressing up. We can easily picture someone dressed-down, but not dressing-up might suggest something else about your demeanor. It's kinda arrogant actually.

This is just my opinion based on my experience. Good luck!
