Among the breakthrough new features shown to the 2,000 developers paying $2,000 each to attend TechEd: Solitaire with new background images, a scrolling Alt+Tab bar and Microsoft's version of Mac OS X's Expose function, which allows all the open Windows to be viewed at once.

Only two years to copy. Microsoft is really catching up.

I remember the expose like feature MS is using being discussed awhile back. Many people brought up the topic that this feature adds a nice effect, but it has no functional value in the way MS implimented it.

"Think Same (eventually)"

Hey i just got one!

"Think Like They Do" :D :D :D

EDIT:

Even so actually, Vista still looks like Windows XP with some fancy effects and some naff attempt to screw over OpenGL and push DX.

The beta's have looked pretty poor considering the wait and the feature list kept 'decreasing' and the time frame expanding. Looks like Microsoft want to get the biggest 'reasons to switch to OSX' into their OS in any way shape or form possible - even if its not practicaly implimented they can stick the feature on their website, which is what counts? ;) . Just makes them look a tad despirate.

If the third screenshot down is Microsoft's version of Exposé, it's a pretty poor copy. All the windows in one row across the middle of the screen? Exposé occasionally does that when all the windows on screen are the same size and in the same position, and I find it very annoying. Of course annoying is the name of the game when it comes to MS.

Yay! Upgraded Solitaire!!!111

Hey upgrading Solitaire is one if not the only reason people actually buy a PC and Windows. ;) :)

Hoot is upgraded, is it v2.0 or...

Its got to be pretty sad considering that MS is highlighting a computer game in they DevConference. Sad day indeed. On a brighter note, if Vista looks like XP with some new system games its good to go. :D

I can hear all the Windoze users going ape over this at the end of next year - and saying WOW Microsoft is great!

sigh - sometimes it's best not to educate the heathens!

Other reason not to buy a mac...

I can hear the crowd... exposé is there! ...

Wait, didn't Steve approve this last year @ WWDC? ;)

apple's legal side should start investigating this...
MS and Apple have pretty broad agreements to use each others' stuff. You can consider this one a trade for fast user switching if you like.

eh, we know expose' was too good for M$ not to copy

exactly.

i'm glad they are going to copy it. i use windows everyday, and everyday i seem to place my mouse pointer in a corner to show all the windows.

That's exactly what I thought-- an alt tab with screenshots instead of icons.

Incidentally, I have had a third-party $10 "expose" app on my XP machine at home for 18 months-- it was originally called "winexpose" then changed to "winplosion" after apple threatened them-- it's an expose clone with hot corners and function keys-- its not nearly as smooth as expose, but it is a rough approximation.

Winplosion website.

Just to be fair...

Maybe the way MS is doing Expose is smarter than the Apple way. It is nice to have the window images organized in rows, which makes it easier to find what you are looking for vs. a random scattering of windows images.

Now, with that said,

Microsoft is pathetic. They've had 5 years, they spend billions in R&D, and can't they come up with one single idea that is unique to themselves?

Just one idea?

This is the problem with monopolies...
