They wouldn't call it Macbook Lite I don't think, because it sounds wimpy. (Who likes Lite Beer?)

Macbook Air sounds as outdated as my 1989 Air Jordans sitting in some landfill somewhere. I'm sure many of us won't like what it's called at first, but we'll come around because we'll like the product so much. I mean, who doesn't like their MBP? I just came from a 2 day conference and EVERY clinician used one for their presentation.

Palestrina

I really hope it isn't lame sort of like this past year's WWDC.

If MWSF is just a bunch of talking about how successful Apple is, and then perhaps a 16 gb iPhone or something, I'll be very upset.

Why would Apple take something like "Air" when they could call it the MacBook nano and they would know that people would understand it better as it's already part of a model line.

...and why did Apple shift from PowerBook to MacBook Pro? I doubt I'll ever fully understand all of their naming decisions. :)

naming

yes yes, macbook was hated to. if this is it, you'll get used to it, etc etc.

so how small can these names go? what's next?

mini > nano > air > (?)

2010 macworld announcment: Mac Helium? Mac Hydrogen?

^_^

...so would that mean that the new machine is a variant of the Macbook and not the Macbook Pro?

Or is that to say that MacBook is the brand but pro is the specificity of the model?

...and why did Apple shift from PowerBook to MacBook Pro? I doubt I'll ever fully understand all of their naming decisions. :)

That's an entirely different thing, though. They already have the iPod nano, why not make the MacBook nano. It would be a good usage of what you already have and what people already know.

I think that MBA is a horrible name, it doesn't feel as timeless as the Macbook or the Macbook pro, it sounds cheap and gimmicky. I do think it's the real name, though. I think Apple is just referencing the external optical drive and that it will be wireless.

I only asked for a small tablet, not a 13' Macbook :(

Why add a keyboard when it needs to be so thin they kill the optical drive?

Didn't people say the Nintendo Wii was a terrible name, but now they love it?

I think if this notebook holds true to its proposed name of "Air," the name is a good name.

Air = composed of nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, trace gases.

So the 4 products are

Macbook NITRO
Macbook OXYO
Macbook C02
Macbook GAS

...so would that mean that the new machine is a variant of the Macbook and not the Macbook Pro?

yeah, this sounds like it is going to be a cheaper, low end machine, based on the name. The small market breaks down into two categories essentially: the ultra low-end (asus eepC) and the ultra high end (sony vaio) The ultra low end is an emerging market, and I wouldn't be surprised to see Apple take a go at it. I don't imagine these machines costing 300 like the asus, but perhaps, 600-800. No optical..some sort of small flash drive, etc.

edit: I personally would like to see a pro model, 2K, basically a 13" MBP half the thickness of the current machines.

I think that when
They say Air it is short for
macbook air and when they say there's something in the air they are saying that it is so small that it would be hard to imagine that there is anything I'm
it

The problem with 'air' compared to 'mini' or 'nano' is that it says nothing about the product. 'mini' and 'nano' both mean small. air doesn't mean anything.

Curious indeed.

Anybody else notice that there was a reference to the Apple TV in the same part of the Adium logs?

I have to agree, MacBook Air just doesn't sound too great. Hopefully that's not the name..if it is well then it is lol. But as a few of you guys said, those logs aren't too legit. Ohh how I can't wait for the 15th! Luckily I have lame-o classes that I can easily zone out and watch macrumors

Well, this part is interesting (from the article):

One of our readers, Jon Cotton, found a mention of a "MacBook Air" on one of Adium's usage log reports. Subsequent verification from Google Cache reveals that this log entry was made on January 9th, BEFORE the Macworld posters were revealed. Therefore, someone would have had to have known about the posters and made the reference to "Air".

It's possible someone saw the banners before we did and somehow made his Mac show up as "Macbook Air" to play a trick on us all. Since this thing is not yet out in the wild, I doubt someone at Apple installed Adium on it just for the hell of it. If this thing exist and runs OSX, why test if Adium works with it? I would have understood if they tested Photoshop or something to benchmark it since Steve likes to show scores for new hardware. Adobe software likes "calling home".

Or this is legit and someone out there has one and is using it. 27 hours to go and we'll know. When the Macbook came out, it was rumored to get that name and I just typed "http://www.apple.com/macbook/" in the address bar hoping it would pop out. And it did, and was the first to post it in these forums, even before steve announced it.

So on K-day (keynote day), just make up hardware names and put it in the URL (example http://www.apple.com/macbookair/) and refresh like crazy during the keynote.

If it really is called the Macbook Air, I wonder if the "air" refers to wireless, a la Airport, and not just the lightness of the device itself. Perhaps it comes with a wireless base station with optical drive, and some ability to get to it on the road through .mac or something.

yep..

i'm expecting an apple tv update where you can buy stuff off of iTMS (like on iPhone)..

Apple sure is hyping up the climax... let's just hope it lives up to it.. otherwise it's our own faults for (always) expecting too much and then feeling deflated.. lol!!
