Thank you for your kind words. I really appreciate them.

I taught middle school (7th & 8th grade) for over 10 years.

yeah yeah, that's all very nice......but when are you going to get to the important stuff? How many weeks will it take until Squilly can buy a Lambo to ride around town? :p

He has to invest a lot more than $2,000 for that to happen. It takes money to make money.;)

I predict a whole bunch of new "covered calls" being made/created/sold (??) as we all run out and use our new found knowledge. Thanks ufcgrad93. :)

I hope some try it and are successful. If you do it, let me know how you do. I use TD Ameritrade and could walk you or anyone else through the process through some PMs or even a phone call.

IMPORTANT
I know that TD Ameritrade has to approve your account to trade options. I would imagine that other brokerages would require that as well. However, covered calls are a pretty low risk set of options, so I would imagine that most people would be approved for it.

I'd assume TD Ameritrade would charge a $10 commission fee for options too?

Thanks… but I'm not going to try it. I've got my portfolio handled by professionals… I would rather spend my time taking photos. I know my skills… and picking winning stocks is not one of them. I bought Massey Ferguson (a long time ago), didn't invest in Trivial Pursuit (I could have been in on the ground floor) and bought Nortel… at a $1. I mean - after being at $100 how much lower could it go, eh?

Now real estate… that's another story. I've got a nose for that.

A little OT but if I invested in a Apple tomorrow, would I get the dividend? Or must I have invested on Friday?
Also, 2000th post :)

The date of record is May 12, so if you buy it tomorrow then you should get the dividend.

From the link I posted earlier.

To be a stockholder on the record date an investor must purchase the stock before the ex-dividend date. The latest date he can buy the stock to be a stockholder on record and be entitled to the dividend would be one day prior to the ex-dividend date (this includes extended hours (pre-market and after-hours) of that day) to allow for the three stock trading day settlement of the stock purchase. If the investor purchases the stock the day before the ex-dividend date the investor would be a stockholder on the record date and would be entitled to receive the dividend payment.

Looks like I was mistaken earlier. The ex-dividend date was May 8th. You needed to purchase the stock before that date.

Interesting thread. I do something differently I don't like buying stocks over $30 because I like to have at least 100 shares of something. It goes up 1 dollar I made 100 bucks. The dividend is 0.16 cents a share then I make 16 dollars.

Also buying companies you know and like is your best bet. I have also gone up 400%+ just be smart don't buy things you don't know about.

Sony just dropped 7% today. Think its a great time to buy it. You have to do research on companies and buy high sell low.

I wouldn't touch Apple with a 10000000000000 yard stick. Tho I did own almost 200 shares when I sold them at 710 :) got them at $87 a share. I but 50 when they tanked to $390 a share they have gone up a lot since then but still.

51 shares cost me $20,000. It has increased a little over $10,000 not including dividends.

With $20,000 in smaller stock I made way more money. Bought Nokia when it was 2 or 3 bucks when I saw the Windows phone. Sold for 9 and had like 3,000 shares. I had 6,000 shares in Sprint at $1.90 sold at $11 bucks.

Good to start young. I am 26 now and have been investing since I turned 20 and have made way way more money then I do working.

I am a huge huge fan of dividends.

Really you make money doing that? Do you sell puts?

It is interesting that you say that about Apple yet said earlier that Sony was a good buy.

Agreed. Start early and time is on your side.

Dividends are good.
