Invisible mailboxes "On My Mac"

I am new to Mac, so bear with me. Using the Help feature in Apple Mail, I created mailboxes, and chose "On My Mac" as a location. "On MY Mac" appears underneath Inbox etc, but the mailboxes inside it do not show up unless I dragging and dropping emails into them. How can I see/open the mailboxes? Clicking "ON My Mac" does nothing. Help would be appreciated!
