Has anyone else had problems with the $139 Iomega USB 500GB drive that Apple is/was selling. When I bought my imac, the Apple salesperson told me the Iomega was the best drive for Time Machine.

Well, after about 3 days, the unit died and is back to Iomega for replacement.

Anyone else having problems with that drive?

Iomega 500GB drive problems with Time Machine

Who makes the drive that Iomega uses in their enclosure?

Some drives are more reliable than others.

When I need another external hard disk, I buy an Hitachi, most reliable HD on the market, in my opinion. And then purchase a Mercury, hard drive enclosure from OWC.

It's cheaper, and I've not had problems with this setup.

I'm using the Iomega UltraMax 1TB external on my Mac Pro for Time Machine and haven't had a single problem. I'm very impressed with the package.

Hard drives do fail, and about 3% fail within the first 3 months (if I'm reading the Annual Failure Rate data correctly). Your experience is not really unusual.
