Ion-X Cracked in Less than 2 Days

The "issue" is that most mechanical watches have a metallic (or plastic) bezel surrounding the inset crystal, so the crystal itself takes fewer impacts.

Apple Watch of course has edge-to-edge curved glass, so striking the edge results in direct impact to the curved crystal - no bezel to take the brunt of the force. This can more easily result in cracks.

And that's still the point... the Ion-X will receive more "fracturing" than Sapphire in average use, and is more likely therefore to shatter earlier with average use. There is a range of serious blows that the Ion-X will not shatter presuming it hasn't had much fracturing to begin with (microfractures) than the Sapphire, but in normal everyday use the Sapphire will likely shatter later than the Ion-X.

I believe if Ion-X had proven to be superior in every way that Apple has every incentive to build a cheaper product to move units and build market share. The folks who are saying it was just Apple taking advantage of ignorance of the qualities of Ion-X relative to Sapphire to simply get more margin I believe are off the mark. As another poster said, in time we will hear more users with Ion-X issues, and will not just be proportional to the number Sport vs SS and higher Watches.

I saw a drop test where the ion-x survived but the sapphire cracked.

I saw 2 videos where the ion-x survived and the sapphire cracked. I also saw 3 videos where the Ion-X cracked and the sapphire didn't.

So it's 3 to 2 from the YouTube videos I watched that the Ion-x is less resilient than sapphire. The reality is, given a force great enough to shatter the crystal, any crystal will, regardless of what it's made of. Given that, I'd much rather have a scratch free crystal 99% of the time, and replace a cracked crystal as the need arose.

Bottom line, it's a bad design by Apple, the entire crystal is exposed, compared to other luxury watches which are generally recessed into the bezel, so it doesn't really matter what it's made of.

I have now whacked my sapphire crystal good twice since 4-24. Plus I wear it to a physical job everyday where it get knocked on things and gets wet.. Not a mark on it. If I do crack it thats why I have Applecare+

FWIW

"How does sapphire compare to chemically strengthened Gorilla Glass?
It is unclear if sapphire can compete with Gorilla Glass. Sapphire certainly is hard – harder to scratch than Gorilla Glass – but transmits about six percentage points less light and may introduce optical distortions. Sapphire is also 67 percent heavier than Gorilla Glass per unit volume, difficult to process (especially at the thinness of Gorilla Glass) and costs significantly more to produce. Based on Corning’s own durability tests, we believe that in normal mobile phone use, sapphire would break more easily than Gorilla Glass – especially if sapphire is used at the same thinness as Gorilla Glass."

The glass cracked without any physical impact sounds like a manufacturing defect, which is covered by the one-year warranty. Apple replaced your watch under warranty, it's just routine customer service, nothing special. Don't overthink.

Make an appointment. It is most likely covered. The SS is nice but there are way too many people crowing about the superiority of their purchase before we are even 6 months in. There are few my SS scratched threads or my sapphire (coating) scratched threads.

FWIW I've had a Sport I use heavily for over a month now and it's flawless.

My information comes from years and years of use. You watch and see in this forum which watch faces breaks the most. Just because the sapphire is harder and more brittle due to that fact, it is MUCH stronger and would take a much higher force to break it. The Ion glass is well it is just glass with a surface that is "supposed" to resist scratches. Other than that it is just glass as you will see.

You've had years of use with ion glass displays on watches?

There are videos showing the sapphire shattering and the ion glass not.

Sapphire is generally more prone to cracking than the ion glass Apple uses.

No, you are ASSUMING. My watch(s) have been Sapphire.

You can find a video for about anything you want to see.:p
Just go here for images of Ion glass at work: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1883166/

Tired of the argument, I guess Apple has made a horrible mistake and should have put just Ion Glass on all of their watches! LOL! Not.

I will take Sapphire anyday:p

Glass breaks, its glass, its what it does...gorilla glass, ion x, sapphire, doesn't matter, you hit it hard enough or just right its going to break.

I think some people got a bad batch or are severely understating how they've treated their watches. I've accidentally bashed mine a few times already and the cat got a hold of it off the charger once and flung it around the floor a bit. Not a scratch. I have AppleCare+ so I'm not worried anyways, but the thing still looks like the day I took it out of the box over a month ago.

Don't forget that sapphire glass reflects 2x the ambient light as the ion-x glass, which apparently really hampers optical performance. Also, sapphire's viewing angle is weaker than the ion-x glass's because of the density of the glass.

The glass is the reason I chose the sport model. Plus, I know it's the same as the glass on my 6+ which I've been using constantly since it was released and has no scratches. I've never used anything with sapphire glass, so I figured I'd go with experience.

Just my two cents, though.

2 days into owning my Space Grey 38mm watch there was a hairline fracture down the left side of it. I babied it and only wore to it work and home. Not a scratch on the thing so not sure how this happened other than using Force Touch? I was pissed when I found this and I thought Apple was going to charge me to replace it but to my surprise they did not! I took it to a store on Saturday and they are sending me a new one. I guess Apple doesn't need any bad coverage right now so they are doing everything they can to appease their customers?

Personally, I just love when someone starts a new thread, and never comes back to that thread to respond, or answer any questions. The troll community that follows Apple is unbelievable. I've been wearing my AW since April 24th. I've used it in a work kitchen every day, and I don't have one scratch on it. For some crazy reason 'I can remember' if my arm is swinging so freely that it might just bash into any and every object in it's path.

Stop sashaying that arm around so much, and keep an eye on where you're going. ROFL :eek::eek:

Well thanks for that information!

Don't get out much do we?

??

I wasn't directing the comment at you. Hence the space between the paragraph. People were saying that sapphire is more scratch resistant which I was agreeing with.
I get out plenty. Been playing golf all week actually being on half term break.
