I think it's funny when that 3rd party app for this was removed, some said things like "if you lose them, you're stupid, good riddance to that app!" and now Apple is making it one of their own features...which is what I originally suspected was the reason for the 3rd party app's removal.

Apple's AirPods are wire-free, which makes them convenient to use, but it's also caused some concern from users who are afraid to lose their $159 earphones. In its latest beta, Apple has introduced a new feature to assuage customer fears - Find My AirPods.

Available in iOS 10.3, Find My AirPods adds your AirPods to the "Find My iPhone" app, listing them alongside all other Apple products. In the app, you can tap on the AirPods to cause them to play a little chirping sound that gradually gets louder for location purposes.

After activating the sound, you can choose to have it play solely through the left AirPod or through the right AirPod so you don't need to listen to chirping if only one of the AirPods is missing.

The location of the AirPods is displayed on the iPhone's screen. The AirPods rely on the iPhone's GPS to display a location (or another iOS device) and will offer up the last known place where the AirPods were connected should the AirPods be misplaced.

Find My AirPods isn't a perfect solution because the AirPods have no built in cellular connectivity of their own, but with the ability to see the last known location, AirPods owners can at least go to that spot to attempt to reconnect, and the included sound capabilities help narrow down a location.

Find My AirPods is activated automatically when iOS 10.3 is installed. AirPods show up in the menu as soon as they're connected to an iOS device. iOS 10.3 is currently limited to developers, but a public beta should be available in the near future.

Great! Does it also help you find where in the country I can actually buy AirPods in the first place?

The best part of this...is how its 1000000x better than the joke-of-an-app and its similar clones that were released and quickly removed from the App Store.

Its just so vindicating after arguing with the so called "developers" of those apps about how horribly hacky and amateur their implementation was.

Of course no mention in your post of how pathetic those Apps were...they were hacks at best, not even qualified to be called Apps.

Being someone who just lost my 4th gen Apple TV remote it would be amazing if the apple tv remote app or iOS in general was able to locate my damn remote using bluetooth. Took my couch apart looking for it. not paying $80 for a new one....:mad::mad::mad:

I did the same thing recently.

Those third party applications were not even guaranteed to work or tested by any users. Besides being pulled, Apple's find my Airpods were likely more practical and the same as my find my iPhone.

I tried to use this feature, but my AirPods is still nowhere to be found in the entire world...I guess it's still being materialize from my order.

I open the find my iphone app and the airpods are not showing up. They are connected to my iphone, not sure why this is? Anyone else have this issue at first?

Yeah, it's the only remote I lose all the time. But at least it's thin, thanks Apple!

I tried this beta out now, but also the Finder for Airpods app to see how they compare.

Finder for Airpods doesn't have the map or the chirping.

But one thing I noticed after unpairing is that Finder for Airpods still finds it even when unpaired - which is not good because it means anyone with the app could find my airpods.

But with iOS 10.3, after unpairing, when find the airpods is invoked it will automatically pair first BEFORE chirping - which means it will ONLY find MY airpods and not somebody else's.

So in this regard I think the iOS 10.3 method is better than the Finder for Airpods app.

As long as this new feature is solely restricted to the currently connected device or your account alone, I don't have too much of a problem with it.

If one restricts access to find-my-friends or family members, this seems like a potential loophole. We'll see how it plays out.

It would be great if in "lost mode" they could beacon their signal to any iOS device around to communicate to iCloud its location.

Basically like the Tile locator, except it wouldn't need an app and would benefit from the compulsory participation of every iOS user.

Does anyone else find it absurd to think that technology has brought us to a point where you can get driving directions to your left AirPod?

Let me guess Apple will add GPS next year when they could have added it this year. iWatch all over again.

How do you know they could have added it this year?

That's how it always is. It's Apple's MO.
