With iOS 10 now available to the public, there are hundreds of new Messages apps available in the dedicated Messages App Store. For the first time, we're getting a look at just what apps in Messages are going to be capable of, and it's more than a just a gimmick.

There are apps for all doing all kinds of things, from expressing yourself with GIFs and stickers, to sending song lyrics, sharing movie information, maps locations, weather reports, and more, plus there are even more in-depth tools for figuring out what restaurant to eat at, sending money to friends, and other conveniences that are sure to save you a lot of time.

In the list below, we've gathered up a handful of some of the most useful apps in the Messages App Store, so if you're looking to see what Messages apps can do, this is a good starting point.

Installing a Messages App

To install an app from the Messages App Store, tap on the "App Store" icon when in a conversation. From there, tap on the icon of four dots to open the app drawer, then choose the "+" button to access the store itself. The Messages App Store is similar to the iOS App Store, so choose an app and then tap on the price or "Get" to download it.

Messages apps are usually installed automatically, but can be accessed in the App Store by tapping on "Manage" and toggling apps on and off.

I hope that some of you who aren't fans of sticker packs will find more value in some of the Messages App Store apps that have true time-saving potential. I'm still trying to sort through all of the available apps, so let me know if I missed something truly novel and/or useful.

I'm a lot more impressed with these apps than I thought I would be so far.

And here, iMessage stopped being the serious, sane messaging service.
I don't know, being able to lookup and reserve restaurants and send money to people without leaving a conversation seems pretty sane and in fact useful to me.

Very informative article. Might have to check out a few of these add-ins.

However my emotional maturity with the new messages app has only achieved sending slowly-drawn animated abuse to my housemate, while he's stuck at work. I doubt that's going to change any time soon. :D

It's truly quite hilarious how some people seem to think that all this extra jazz somehow detracts from the core functionality of Messages. Don't like it? Don't use it. iMessages still work just as they did before, just because there are fireworks, 99 balloons and who knows what to fool around with, does not mean you have to. On the other hand, If your masculinity requires constant validation, then I guess bellyaching about a piece of software is one way to go.

Reading the article above there actually seem to be quite useful add-ons floating around already. Will have to check some of them out at one point or another.

Anyone else having issues using certain iMessage apps on an iPhone 6? The ESPN, Fandango and GIF Keyboard apps simply display their logo on the space that should be displaying content on my phone. Wondering if I did something wrong or if some of these are coded to only work with 3D Touch devices.

iPhone 6 here - ESPN is working fine. I saw the logo too but after a few seconds the content showed up. Come to think of it, all of them just showed the logo while it "loaded up" for the first time. However, for ESPN, it is showing me the scores of two teams which I've favorited in the main ESPN app and also show up in my Today/Widgets view.

I am incredibly surprised by this part of the update. Easily the best part of it so far. There's so many incredibly useful things that tap into iMessage... it's awesome.

Scanbot Go's messaging app is great for sending documents or business cards to each other. Just call up the app, point the camera at the doc/card and it auto crop and snaps a pic and then puts it in the send message field...just hit send...awesome.

I wouldn't call it .... .. well actually i would call it sane ..

More likely if i every see messages in iOS 10 it will make me go in-sane..

Dunno why u need to access this from Messages first though. Probably coz it's easier than doing it from the same store.
