Last night we had a tornado touch down 10 miles from my house (in Concord MA) - there was an iphone weather alert at 3.00am but neither myself nor my wife woke up, so we assume the audible part did not occur. I thought the audible alert was still supposed to occur even if the iphone is silenced.

anyone else had any issues with this?

Running ios 10 public beta 5 and 6.

Unfortunately, the silencer does indeed silence the EAS tone for wireless emergency alerts. It will vibrate like crazy, but that's about it. Been doing this since iOS 8 as I recall.

I recommend to people who may have threatening weather overnight to keep phones off silent for this exact reason.

I can't speak for the current Beta, but when I was on Public Beta 5 there was an Amber Alert in my area and my 6S+ made an audible alert.

The strange thing about that is that I recall being woken up by a loud AMBER alert notification at night. Seems kind of inconsistent if the different alerts work differently isn't that respect.

Really? I could have sworn I've been woken up by AMBER Alerts in the past when my phone was on silent. Unless AMBER alerts are an exception.

You'd think that emergency alerts would be more of an exception, or at the very least just as much.

Yikes, hope you and your loved ones are all okay! I'm not that far from there. My phone was on Do Not Disturb as well but the volume was switched on - I always leave it on in case someone from my Favorites calls me during the night. I saw the alerts in the morning but also didn't hear any audible alarms, and I'm a light sleeper so I'm sure I would have. I agree this should be fixed - we should all submit feedback on this. I'm still on 9.3 though, for what it's worth.

Weirdly enough, I just downloaded the American Red Cross Emergency app yesterday afternoon, and got all the warnings from them too. Very helpful except for the nighttime sound issue. It would be really awesome if we could pick apps that always bypass Do Not Disturb.

Yes I had my phone on silent AND do not disturb.

Luckily everyone we know was not effected by the tornado.
Actually I believe it only caused property damage and no personnel damage.

And...as a fellow New Englander...no one expects tornadoes at night in New England. So no one would have turned off DND for this storm. And that's precisely when this should work...when you're not expecting a crisis.

Could you change the DND settings to silence more so that you do not have to put it on silent too? I have my DND set to silence all except calls on the list. Everything else is silenced so no need for silent mode. I suppose if you get a ton of calls but maybe working the favorites list might help?
