iOS 11.3 and tvOS 11.3 Introduce Support for AirPlay 2

I remember I was able to use multiple AirPlay speakers back like 5 years ago. What makes AirPlay 2 different?

Are they all of a sudden going to disable the multi speaker functionality from AirPlay [1] and make us pay for all upgrades? I have maybe 5-6 speakers already all have AirPlay [1].

You didn't on iOS without extra software. iOS doesn't support playing to multiple speakers.

Why do I want to play the same song on multiple TV's with ****** speakers?

Just because your TVs have sh*t speakers, it doesn't mean that everyone's does. Many people have soundbars or hi-fidelity speakers connected to their tvs.

And a firmware update for airport express? Please?

I'm hoping for this too, but realistically it seems unlikely since Apple has said they've ceased development of Airport (at a time when Google and many other companies are selling tons of them!?)

I wouldn't mind switching to an TV with a 3.5mm/optical jack. Seeing how the 4th and 5th gen don't even have optical, it's pretty much a lost cause. ☹️

I use to use Airplay lots, but I find chrome casts are more useful for streaming. Plus, Apple TVs just suck. I bought one Apple TV4, and found Roku significantly better now. So now I strictly use Roku and chrome cast.

And thank god I don't need to use that awful Apple TV4 remote.

Anyways, my rant is that Airplay 2 should have come out a long time ago. It's another great piece of software from the Jobs era, that has been left to rot under Tim Fn Cook. Just like Siri, competitors are so far ahead, these little updates don't help with their utility.

Long live steve!

If Apple doesn't update the Airport Express, they're going to have to release (or partner with another company on) a similar solution. There's no way the AirPlay 2 multi-room ecosystem is not going to include a device with audio out for stand-alone amps/speakers.

EDIT: I shouldn't say 'no way' because Apple sometimes leaves puzzling gaps like this in otherwise elegant solutions..........

That's very sad. But I think you're right... Having just installed iOS11.2.5 on my iPhone 7, and hearing that there's support for AirPlay2 coming in 11.3, I checked to see if there were updates available for my AirPort expresses (I have four, and happily use them for a variety of things including multi-room audio from my Macbook Pro or even Windoze and iTunes)... but there was no update available. I did notice an update for them recently, but I believe this was only for the Krack vulnerability... but it still gave me hope that there might be someone working on it somewhere!? Maybe!?

Since it looks like earlier versions of the ATV won't get AirPlay2, I'm guessing the AirPorts are a lost cause. I just can't help but hope, though.

Very interesting find by someone yesterday in the Home App. A possible victory for us Airport Express users. Check out this link! https://imgur.com/a/TMxfV

I would love for this to be true... but it looks fake to me. :(

Nope. But my point is, if my iMac from 2001 can do this, why couldn’t iOS after all these years? Seems silly to wait for HomePod.

I agree. They are selling this as one of the two main features of Airplay 2. Fundamentally, it just seems lackluster. I know plenty of people will want multiple destinations for Airplay via iOS, but I personally would much rather use my iTunes on my computer. Whenever I do it with my phone, I am far more likely to get dropouts as I move around the house with the phone in my pocket, and I have robust WIFI coverage in the house with 2 Airport Extremes (newest versions). It also drains my phone's battery significantly when I am streaming from the phone. It just doesn't seem like a big enough feature to be a "main selling point". I imagine a lot of people that run ethernet cables and have a desktop or laptop would rather Apple spend some time updating the "Remote" app. Perhaps adding the ability to access Apple Music through it?... PLEASE?!

i'm all about the quality of the sound. I like clear full sound. 350 is a hefty price for something it will not be supported in 5 years. I would recommend you to go check Wharfedale, Dali, speakers. you can connect them to any amplifier and also enjoy music casts from many online service.(napster, spotify, amazon and some i do not even know. And yes, you will have radio! when you switch it off it will take 0 power. I can not imagine myself to be annoyed with Siri.
M-Hello Siri, HELLOoo SIRI... Bitxx WAKE UP. :D
S-OH Hello Mikecorp,
M- Siri" tell me a joke :D
S-no Internet connection, please try again later.

I was hoping to see a manual delay option for airplay 2. I have two Apple TVs playing music, but there’s a slight delay on one of them which makes them out of sync. Maybe on a later beta, but for now it’s back to the caveman days of just one airplay stream at a time.

I just got a Roku TV. With it running the Plex client for my iTunes music and movies, and plenty of streaming apps, I have no reason to buy a new Apple TV (I had planned to go from gen 2 to 4K). I had no idea Roku was this competitive, and it saddens me when I think about how far ahead the Apple TV was when I bought it. It was also the gateway to everything else Apple that I own. If I had seen this first I might still be on different PC, phone, and tablet platforms.

Other than the queuing songs feature and the “improved buffereing”, what different is this from playing music through multiple AirPlay speakers with iTunes? Been doing that for over 10 years.
But if you are able to listen to different songs in different rooms it will be a game changer. Sonos will no longer be the only option for multi room different song playback.

Not sure what you prefer in the Roku over Apple, but you clearly don't use AirPlay, iCloud, iTunes, or any of Apples other services. The ATV 4K is the best of Apple integration in a streaming media server. I wouldn't trade it for a Roku, which I've had, at all.

hard deadlines = less quality or features.

macOS used to come out with 10.x releases when they were ready, not on a hard schedule, and it was higher quality, IMO.

This is just so wrong.

hard deadlines = more specific focus on targets to be resolved or completed. Dedicate the resources (people, technology, research, and testing) to get 'er done, and done right. Plain and simple. With over 20'000 employees and more to come, I find it VERY strange Apple is not resolving bug fixes faster or more succinctly to correction the first time they're tackled.

Sure there have been a few unseen surprises this last quarter: finding out about throttling set back a few items, along with Spectre and Meltdown.

There was just some sort of better quality between OSX and iOS when they each had their own programmer/Executive management separate from one another. I dislike Federighi and my reasons are sound ... yet I feel with MacOS, iOS, and now head for Siri he's being burned out or spread too thin.

I applaud the great new features iOS has been getting in iOS 11, along with specific features to iPad (even if I'd like to see them in iPhone), and seeing more parity for features across both. I just feel this can be done in tandem without so much a payload on Federighi and his team. Unless of course his team is exponentially expanding yet with great internal insight and input for better features and fixes in design and implementation of features going forward.

Ex:
Let Iovine lead the music business, don't let him lead the design of the iOS Music app or the MacOS Music app. Let him make suggestions of where and how features are accessed ... yet let a diehard music lover that walks and/or takes public transit to Apple, eats and sleeps music with headphones one and even has his morning shower, sex, and bedtime playlists currated every week work on the actual UI design and implementation.
- why is Shuffle, Replay/Replay1 so deeply hidden?
another example:
Sonos .. you make speakers and music that's it! Why the hell when I play my playlist from my phone (I don't subscribe to Apple Music or iTunes Match), is songs being played from my playlist for onther 60 seconds then auto skipped to the next song on iPhone battery power with over 40% battery?!! Grrrr!

I don't drive a car, not until summer this year and that's due to the fear of my heavy right foot and speed demon past. I live and die with music just about every moment of each day of my life for just about 30yrs and one of the MAIN reasons I'm sticking to iPhone over any other phone/platform, yet Music UI app has sucked lately!

I like what I see in AirPlay2 just not looking forward to iOS12.

So how far behind is iOS 12 given Apple is still finishing iOS 11 features?

Or will it be a Bug Fixing year? (And hopefully a real one, as the big this year are brutal.)

Fall 2018 iOS 12 will debut. I think we'll see a staggard release of features like what we've been seeing with iOS 11 going forward (ex Apple Pay Cash, iMessages in iCloud, AirPlay 2, etc).

I've used Roku devices, they have clunky UI/UX if you ask me. But, if you don't use airplay iCloud or iTunes, or don't have a 4K TV, then whatever floats your boat. Maybe a new Roku is better than the ATV2, but, the ATV 4K is a far cry from the ATV2.

One thing, if you have a 4K TV, you won't be able to play iTunes content in 4K. Apple does not allow downloads of 4K content, only streaming via the ATV 4K, and, if you have HD iTunes content already, if it's now (or becomes) available in 4K, you'll get a free upgrade (from most content providers except Disney).

People seem to love or hate the ATV siri remote, but, I'm in the middle, I like it, once I read some tips and tricks online for the ATV(4) and found out how much you can do. One thing I love is when you pause, you can then very quickly scroll through the content, also w/thumbnail of the picture in most cases, by sliding sideways across the remote to find your place, press play/pause again and it'll pick up there pretty quickly (I have ATV 4th gen and slow internet).

The ATV4K, having the A10X processor, from what I've read from people who own it, is very fast.

I have to disagree. When you add features and have a hard deadline, every year the same time frame, it's just not going to allow for the quality to be there. I don't think it's a management issue, is a known fact in any business. I'm sure what I wrote didn't come across quite right, as, like I said, I took it out of context, and by doing that, I may be oversimplifying a bit, but, the reality is, you can't rush quality.

It took 16 months to go from iPhone 4 to the 4s. Granted, that was because they were working on the iPhone 5 but couldn't overcome battery drain issue (rumor has it), but, it wasn't out a year after the last iPhone. This did reset the timeframe into the holiday season, which, I think is a bit of a mixed good/bad thing, really.

I think that things are more complicated today then they were when the iPhone first came out, from a security standpoint especially. But, the more technology advances the more complex it gets, you can't just keep it on a set schedule and not expect things to come up like some of the security issues over the last few months. At some point, you need to give it more time or cut a new feature out. Obviously they cut out AirPlay 2, it was in the iOS 11 betas, but pulled after, I think it was beta 3. Whatever issue there was, they had to delay the HomePod because of it. So, yeah, they sometimes change the schedule to maintain quality, but, in this case, it's more about not being able to produce the function in time. I still think they need to get off the yearly schedule for everything, it's just going to get worse.

As far as managing over multiple departments, well, you have overlapping features in iOS, macOS, tvOS, etc., something that didn't exist a few years ago, and, keep in mind, all of them are based on the same core OS.

I listen to music more in my car than anywhere. As far as the Music app goes, I'm with you, it's not the best design, and something is inherently wrong with it, I swear it holds my iPhone captive at times, causing Maps to not update and other things to not work, like it's hogging the data stream or something. I've had issues with other apps that are sometimes solved by closing the Music app. One of my issues is with iTunes, I created playlists and if you need to redo your computer or iTunes for whatever reason, you may lose your playlists, and you can no longer import things from iPhone to iTunes, ...they do need someone managing just the Music department!

I don’t see my TV in the HomeKit app and all are on 11.3.
Tips anyone.
[doublepost=1516876972][/doublepost]
Well I do that with an Elgato smart switch. Soundbar and TV are hooked on the Elgato.
‘He Siri, put on TV’ and it works.
When I say goodnight everything goes off. Lights and tv.
That’s good. But the only smart switch in Australia cost $99 (and I have two). And that’s still a crummy solution.

The only fix for the lag issue that I have found is Airfoil.

And, in addition to fixing the buffer lag, the sound quality is so much better than Airplay.

We also have the option to not buy every generation every year. I regret upgrading my 6S Plus (the most recent generation with a headphone jack). I refuse to upgrade my 2014 MacBook "Pro" until they fit 32GB of RAM in the next gen. I never upgrade any firmware or software until SP3 at the earliest. But as long as people are literally subscribing to iPhone upgrades, upgrading OS's on .0 releases, and so on... Apple will continue along this annual cycle. The only control we have as customers, is to vote with our dollars.

BTW your original paraphrase was spot on. The other version of that quote is, "Good, fast, cheap: pick two." And if anyone doubts Apple's struggle with quality and deadlines, just google "apple aperture mythical man month" for one the most epic train wrecks in their history. Also, they could just fire Eddy Cue. That's half the battle right there.

The new developer betas of iOS 11.3 and tvOS 11.3 introduce AirPlay 2 features, allowing for multi-room music playback on Apple TVs using your iPhone.

With iOS 11.3 installed on an iOS device and tvOS 11.3 installed on one or more fourth or fifth-generation Apple TVs, you can use AirPlay 2 to stream music to multiple devices at the same time.

airplay2appletv.jpg

For example, with two Apple TVs running tvOS 11.3 set up in different rooms in the house, you can use the iPhone to play the same song on both, successfully using the multi-room audio feature of AirPlay 2.

Installing tvOS 11.3 prompts you to add your Apple TV to your HomeKit setup, and you'll be asked to choose a room for it during the setup process. After that's done, the Apple TV is displayed as an available device in the Home app. You can't do much with Apple TV in the Home app, but you can play and pause music.

appletvhomekit.jpg

Announced as part of iOS 11 back in June when the operating system was first introduced, AirPlay 2 introduces features like multi-room audio playback from iOS devices and improved buffering.

AirPlay 2 functionality is limited to devices running the current iOS 11.3 and tvOS 11.3 developer betas, so it basically only works with the Apple TV right now. AirPlay 2 has not yet officially been released by Apple, but in the future, third-party speakers and Apple's own HomePod will support the feature. When AirPlay 2 compatible devices are widely available, you will be able to use AirPlay 2 to control all of the different speakers and devices located throughout your home, for a full multi-room audio experience.

HomePod, which will be available starting on February 9, will not ship with multi-room audio support. It's possible multi-room HomePod playback will be available once iOS 11.3 launches to the public, however, as iOS 11.3 is not set to be released until the spring.

Apple hasn't provided specific details on when the HomePod will be updated with multi-room support beyond stating that it will come in a later update, and AirPlay 2 was missing from the detailed rundown of iOS 11.3 features that Apple shared this morning ahead of the beta's release, so Apple's plans aren't quite clear.

At the current time, AirPlay 2 on iOS 11.3 and tvOS 11.3 is rather buggy and the implementation is clearly incomplete, but Apple will likely make significant improvements over the iOS 11.3 beta testing period.

[doublepost=1517635389][/doublepost]I mean.. it would be nice if Apple just scraped the whole entire Apple TV app and integrated the controls through the home app. I mean they just put the Apple TV there and all it can do is pause and play. Someone over there has got to be thinking of doing this..
