This is great, but I still need a way to prevent my kids from accessing my iMessages or mail app.

Is that a thing?
Assuming you're letting your kid use it to play a game or something, you can use "Guided Access" mode. Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> Guided Access (at the bottom). Once configured, this allows you to launch an app, like a game, and activate guided access. You put in a pin for disabling it then it activates. You can't exit the app until you put the pin in to deactivate. That allows a kid to play a game without accidentally quitting and going somewhere they shouldn't.

I loathe FaceId because it only works half the time under normal circumstances and requires I have the phone at the correct position to identify my face. TouchId was so much more convenvient and flexible, and didn't force me to hold the phone up to unlock.

However, the alternate FaceId will at least make things somewhat better. I'm an avid cyclist and always have to enter my passcode while riding, because FaceId cannot cope with me wearing a helmet and my Oakley tinted riding glasses.

I still loathe FaceId but hopefully this will make it slightly less loathesome.

They’ve just fixed the only issue I have with Face ID. My wife and I want to be able to unlock each other’s iPhone Xs in case of an emergency.

Great! As if the quality of FaceTime wasn’t bad enough already. Now with multiple connections it will probable look like a Van Gogh painting at best!
I think maybe you should reread the title of the post. This is for Face ID, not FaceTime.

Also, you may want to check your internet as FaceTime is crystal clear on my devices

great news. hoping a second (or third) faceid has another profile on iPads

And other superheroes.

And villains...

Actually this will be nice for me - sunglasses + headset + boom mic on the flight deck almost always results in a FaceID fail.

I think the feature is for heavy makeup users who want to be recognized by their phone before they get a chance to put on their face.

Finally Dr Jekyll will be able to use FaceID on his iPhone! :D
This feature is great to enable your spouse unlock the phone without the pin. I think they received plenty of feedback about something you could easily do with touchID

My fiancée and I each have a fingerprint on each other's phones and I have one on her iPad and she has one on my MBP.
Yep main reason I didn’t get an X. My spouse and I need to be able to access each other’s phones in some situations and my spouse is not going to remember my 10 digit code.

Two faces that can unlock the phone will make Face ID considerable.

This sounds like something that will change or be removed. I only say that because if it's intended to be used as an additional person, I think it would be labeled as such. Also, how has no one already tried this and reported back? Just an easy yes...
Because no one has the iPhone 12 yet and that iPhone will be equipped with that option. Perhaps when it arrives the software on your X will update to provide more than 1 photo ID, just guessing on that.

9to5 is saying they tested it with two users, and it works.
