Downloading a damn software update...

This is the first time this has happened. Is there a way to disable it? I have everything unchecked in the iTunes & App Stores section for automatic downloads / using cellular data.

Is General | Software Update | Automatic Updates set to Off?

This is unlikely. iOS updates only come over WiFi.

Weird things happen with betas, a lot of cellular options which normally apply get overruled. A beta or two back people could start the iOS update on WiFi and switch to cellular and it still worked. Essentially why one should not install betas unless they are fully aware beta protocol and/or bugs.

I loved it. I was out of the house with no reliable Wi-Fi until that night and I updated to beta 4 and 5 (i think) over cellular. Updating to beta 6 would just stay at "Estimating time remaining..."..

I just wish Apple would make it an option for people with unlimited data. Even if they add disclaimers and warnings to make it more than obvious that it'll use a lot of data, it should still be an option in my opinion.

I'm willing to bet its a carrier thing, not Apple. Yes Apple can put restrictions and make people sign waivers - then they are free and clear. But carries don't want that extra data on their networks. These betas have been rather large, upwards of 600MB. Imagine all 4,000,000 beta testers installing that OTA. Networks would crawl.

Uncheck "Updates" in iTunes & App store. Do not update apps when you plan to leave the area with WiFi since it will automatically switch to cellular data and it ignores the "Use Cellular Data" even if it is toggle off (same happens to software update)

In Cellular settings, make sure toggle is off for iTunes and App Store and toggle off WiFi Assist to limit any app update or software update to strictly WiFi when WiFi is connected.

No my iPad 10.5 definitely updated over cellular for the 6/5 beta yesterday.

It didn't have auto update on but I forgot I wasn't connected to wifi when I tapped update lol.

Not an issue as I have plenty of data but surprised me as I've never seen that before.
