I wish this would’ve rolled out to 13.5 before I jailbroke my iPhone. Anywho my phone looks and acts the way I want it to now, so there’s no way I would want to jump back on the beta train for this feature.

Who wouldn’t want to install updates

People using their phones to connect to medical devices like Dexcom glucose monitoring, where the device maker updates their app infrequently.

iOS updates can impact app functionality in ways that are at best inconvenient (having to click through a "this iOS version is unsupported" every single time you open the app) to at worst life threatening (signal dropouts due to changes in bluetooth functionality leading to missed low blood glucose warnings).

This really doesn't fix the Number One gripe people have with Apple's heavy handed nag screen approach that pops open a message at random intervals asking you to install an update.
Makes you hate the company and despise the device.

I've had it multiple times where it will nag me and I'll tell it either not now or later and a few seconds later, the nagging box pops up again. Twice, I've had it where I was screen recording something that I had one shot at capturing, and the nagging box popped up. The first time, I was able to get rid of it immediately, but it was still recorded, while second time, I was away from my device and the box was sitting there when I got back. I went back and looked at what I had recorded, and the box had popped up right after I left the device to go work on something else, causing 3/4 of the video to have that box in the middle of the screen, which made the recording a total loss.

I'll update when I want to; the red badge on the settings icon tells me all I need to know.

The default settings will likely reflect how things are set up now -- with at least aromatic downloads being enabled.

I wish I _could_ enable aromatic downloads! (Great cupertino)

It's surely only a matter of time before we truly do have aromatic downloads... I’d like a subtle breeze of lemongrass and ginger every time the twitter app gets an update please!:D

iOS becomes more pro, while macOS becomes more pro hostile. OS development leader really need to get their act together.
This is their whole plan to ditch macOS altogether. Who needs to run macOS If iPadOS can do everything just fine? Virtualisation? Professional grade software? Field support? Leave it to windows and Linux. macOS users need no those bs. /s

"You can now decide whether or not your iPhone or iPad can automatically download iOS updates when connected to WiFi, and when those updates are installed."

That alone would be worth upgrading..

I’m a bit confused. I already have automatic downloads for app updates turned off in Settings > iTunes & App Stores.

What’s the difference here?
App update is not the same thing as iOS update. That button you see only controls the apps you downloaded, while this new toggle controls system Update. “iOS App is not iOS”.
This isn't good. It means they think iOS14 is gonna be so bad, even compared to iOS13, that many people will need a way to stop it even downloading.
What?
Meanwhile, enterprise user would welcome this change as they don’t want workers randomly installing iOS updates and break their corporate apps or causing issues in their workflow. Cue the iOS 13 mails app fiasco.

Really? Disabling automatic downloading of iOS updates should have been a thing in iOS 6. My iPhone 4 is still wasting 3+GB on the unwanted iOS 7 update I will never install. iOS 7 was trash and set Apple on a path of iOS turning to crap. iOS 6 looks beautiful by comparison.

Thanks. Still a little confused. In Settings > General > Software Update, there’s an option to turn off automatic updates.

Apparently, that toggle won’t prevent update from being downloaded via WiFi, which is still bad for a lot of people with metered connection. Also, when update is installed, iOS will go into berserk mode trying to push update being installed as soon as possible. Not really fun.

That mainly controls the automatic installation of an update, while the automatic download is something that is enabled by default and is not controllable by the end user, at least not until iOS 13.6 it would seem.

Thanks both - makes sense.

I do remember getting the annoying ‘install update’ prompt numerous times on my old iPhone 6 which I retired last year when I bought the 11. Strangely though, I don’t get this alert on my 11. I’m still on iOS 13.4 at the moment, haven’t bothered to update it yet. On the software update settings page, there’s a link to ‘download and install’.
