I have a 2008 MacBook that is limited to El Cap.

With the upcoming macOS changes I’m guessing I won’t be able to sync my phone with my laptop if I update my iPhone to iOS 13.

    Any ideas on this?

As mohdamerul stated, you will still be able to via iTunes.

I can confirm that iTunes on El Capitan reads my iPhone XR on iOS 13 DB 1 just fine.

Can anyone please confirm whether Notes sync both ways between iOS 13 & El Capitan?

I understand some features which were introduced in iOS 11 (such as tables and pinned tabs won’t show) but otherwise does it work?

    Thanks

Notes does indeed sync both ways.

At first I thought it was like the Reminders app which gave me an option to upgrade with the warning that several of my devices would not be supported, nor would my family members on Family Sharing, so I told it to not upgrade at this time, and Apple has a clearly noticeable option in Reminders to upgrade when I want to. I see nowhere in Notes where there is an option to upgrade, so I am either not remembering correctly, or there was an option to upgrade and I said later, and there's a missing upgrade option. Keep that in mind just in case it asks you to upgrade.

In the past, I have never experienced a request to update an individual Apple app such as Notes before and it is unusual for Apple to give this sort of option. Usually they just break comparability and force an update/upgrade if you want to have your devices ‘play’ together.

Was this message on El Capitan or iOS 13? Perhaps it is referring to the iCloud end being updated rather than the actual app? Again surprised Apple would give this option but I’m happy to hear it is still working (so far). I realise it could change anytime just like iCloud tabs was broken mid release.

If anything changes in later releases please can you let me know.
    Many thanks.

While I was on El Cap (up until April), as mentioned, basic notes synced ok, anything newer featured (scanned documents, for example) don't. Pretty sure the new iOS 13 Notes additions will not work either on El Cap (that will be big re: groups/folders, icons for lists, new list functions).

Reading List and Bookmarks never really worked between El Cap and newer iOS versions for me. And Safari getting some new features as well that might not play well (eg. End-to-end encryption via iCloud).

Also, Reminders might be an issue with the overhaul that is getting.

    Photos might be a biggie.

Thanks. I understand the new features won’t work. I just hope that the current basic note syncing will continue to work. Fingers crossed!

It was on iOS 13. Here's the message I got on Reminders. I could have sworn I got one on Notes, but it was most likely my imagination.

It's possible that they might not give you a choice after iOS 13's public release in September, but for now, it's an optional upgrade.

    Just for a quick recap.
Notes app received a major upgrade in iOS 9. Anyone who uses iOS 7 or 8 before would be prompted to upgrade their notes when launching iOS 9 notes app.

iOS 13 notes app does receive updates but not enough changes for Apple to upgrade its format again.

Right, just before I go and make a c0ck-up of things... I'm on El Capitan. If I upgrade to iOS 13, my Reminders will sync well between EL Capitan and iOS 13??? BUT my Notes will not sync well??? Is that correct?

Photos on El Capitan currently works fine with iOS 13 DB 1.

Unlike Reminders, I'm not aware of any features iOS 13 brings to Photos that could potentially cause an issue with Photos. Obviously El Capitan won't be getting the new features, but then it hasn't gotten any of the new features that macOS Sierra brought either, but still retains all of the features that El Capitan offered.

Umm, ok. Here is the deal: your notes will sync, and as soon as you don’t upgrade your reminder, it will sync with El Capitan.

    • Notes will sync.
    • Opening Reminders gives you an option to upgrade to new features, with the understanding that it won't sync with El Capitan, etc. You can currently decline, and still have the option to sync without the newest features. That may not be the case in September.
Reminders will give you a screen similar to this:

Hope I can opt out of upgraded reminder just like I opt out of 2FA, indefinitely.

I will make a test account with a new iCloud account before I do any updates in the future.
