Apple in iOS 13 introduced a new "Optimized Battery Charging" feature, which is designed to extend the total battery life of your iOS device.

Found in the Battery section of Settings under "Battery Health," the optional toggle learns from your personal habits and waits to finish charging all the way up until you need your iPhone.

For example, if you often charge your phone up at night while you sleep, Apple might charge it to 80 percent right away, but wait until an hour or so before you wake up to charge the remaining 20 percent.

That keeps your iPhone at an optimal capacity for battery health, rather than keeping it close to 100 percent on the charger.

Avoiding topping up the battery continually while it sits on the charger reduces the amount of time that your device spends at maximum capacity, and over time, this could extend the life of your battery.

Battery health has been a hot topic over the course of the last year, after Apple was found throttling the processor speeds of iOS devices with degraded batteries to prolong device life as long as possible.

That issue spurred Apple to be more forthcoming about overall battery health, providing details about capacity and performance in the Battery portion of Settings. Aside from the new toggle to optimize charging, there are no major changes to the Battery Health feature in the first iOS 13 beta.

This is awesome. I've been waiting for a feature like this! I wonder if there will be a setting in control center to override this setting and charge to 100%, or if this needs to be turned off in settings to charge to 100%.

I'm all for anything they can do to optimize battery performance and extend life, so well done on this one. However, at the end of the day, the one thing they could do to really make a difference is make all the phones just a mm thicker and fill it with battery. Bigger battery is what I want, as much as they can spare.

Stupid question: does this work with 3rd party battery cases like Mophie? While I would guess yes, since it's the same with Apple's own case—I still wondered if something could overwrite this functionality (especially in beta).

Nice feature, especially as my iPhone XS started with a battery health index from 97% from day one...

Now this is awesome, and I’m surprised this is coming out of Apple honestly (they generally compromise customizability in favor of keeping things super simple— sometimes to a fault). After viewing the Linus Tech Tips video about Qi chargers/battery lifespan, I started changing my charging habits to increase the lifespan of my batteries. For example, leaving your phone plugged into the charger all night is bad for the battery. It’s best to charge it up to about 80% then unplug and don’t let it get lower than about 30% before charging back up to around 80%. I added “batteries” to my iPhone widgets to get a look at percentage amounts since, in settings, they removed the ability to show charge percent in the upper right corner of the screen (there’s just a battery icon with a vague indicator of charge level).

It's a good start but I'd much rather have a configurable threshold where I tell the phone what charge level it should stop charging at. Many PC notebooks have this feature and it allows for easy adherence to the 80/20 rule for maximizing LiIon battery lifespans. I never charge my iPhone beyond 80% unless I'm traveling and need a full charge to get through the day without access to a charger.

This sounds like a very good feature but just wondering if you forget to turn it off before you remember that you have an early morning flight and you will be getting up a LOT earlier to a NOT completely charged up phone and don't find out until you are out the door! I'm sure one could make up the other 20% by other means, but just sayin'

This is so smart. Kind of similar to what Tesla does — only recommends charging beyond 80-90% when on a “trip” and about to use that charge in order to limit the time the battery is full and preserve its health.

Sounds great, but what happens if there's the odd day when you have to get up at 3am for a long day of work? Having that 20% missing will be particularly important on a particularly long day.

I mean it could just adjust it to my alarm, but since you can have multiple alarms set, it could get a bit messy.

Then turn the feature off on those days. I mean, since it's an odd day you're already changing your alarm right? Change this along with it.
Yes, it would be nice if it tied to the alarm though. Maybe it will.

I wonder how this will work with the smartbattery cases? Will it only apply 80% to the internal battery or both the internal battery and case? Guess I’ll test it when it comes out.

Looking forward to this. I had Apple replace the battery in my iPhone 6S less than a year ago, and the capacity is already reduced to 85% and I have to keep performance management enabled for the phone to run stably. I'm guessing that constantly using a 2.1A charger has pushed the battery harder than necessary and degraded the life. Hopefully better charge management will reduce this problem in the future.

Wow this is like my tesla, where there’s a feature to top off the battery to 80%. Then start to charge 100% close to the time you actually use the car. So that the battery doesn’t hold on the 100% charge for too long.

Tesla has this for their cars to make the batteries last longer. For regular use, they recommend charging only to 80% and you can set the charger to do so. But on long trips you can change it to 100% for range. Glad Apple is doing this!
I use stats for my tesla m-3. You can precondition the battery to 80%. Then finish charging to 100% shortly before you leave for a trip or work where you need full range.

Why would they make apple battery cases then constantly charge your phone when it’s at 100%

Hopfully this works good with the apple case to fix that

I love this. I’m a bit of a battery nerd and I handle this manually. I’m would love to have it automated. Meaningful longevity improvement.

What happens is you turn off the setting on that one odd day (or night)

A forum conversation with 99% excitement and positive comments! Wow, someone mark this day on a calendar!

Kudos to Apple for continuing to find ways to make life better... for our batteries.

Does the device have the ability to control the external case batteries? Through an app? API? I have no experience with these.

I can't see how iOS can control the charging of an external case unless they talk to each other.

Yes, it would be nice if it tied to the alarm though. Maybe it will.

The ML that Apple is incorporating into this will take input from all system functions, for example alarm clock, calendar, Do Not Disturb, etc.

My only concern is random removal or usage of the device.
