But why? What's the upside compared to AirDrop.
Presumably speed? Perhaps you can mount the local file system from one device in the files.app on the other? Perhaps it’s only intended for migrating from one device to another?
But why? What's the upside compared to AirDrop.
This is already available via the Camera Kit and a Lightning Cable... it's usually only used to move large numbers of photos, but it's fast. there'd be no need for something custom, just an update in the OS to allow direct transfer instead of restoring via the current process. The USB-C Multiport adapter should be able to do the same thing if a device has USB-C.Might this be then a special lightning-to-lightning + power adapter kit that's only available to Apple Store for Genius to quickly help new customers setup their iPhones
If it is going to usb-c, I need to know now so I can prepare! Why keep this particular thing a surprise?
Probably no less than today, where you can transfer the settings from one iphone to another by holding the phones close to one another.I'm hoping there is serious security checks in place with this.
As for the cable, it should be bundled with the 2019 iPhones just like the lightning to audio jack adapter was previously. Charging for this thing? Yeah good luck with that.
It's more likely they'll start including a Lightning to USB-C instead of Lightning to USB-A in the box. Not the same as native USB-C, but at least it solves this problem of not being able to connect to the current model MacBook Pro out of the box.2019 iPhone having USB-C is the only logical explanation with there already being USB-C to Lightning cables available, and almost all other products in the range using USB-C.
That being said, this is Apple, and a Lightning OTG dongle is probably what they will release and continue to sell a new iPhone that can't be plugged into a new MacBook Pro without a dongle.
I like that Apple comes up with new features that we didn't know we needed, and that turn out to be useful. And sometimes eventually indispensible. But honestly, anything that adds extra functionality for some (without taking away any from the rest) is a-ok in my book.
Lightning needs to die already.
Really, it should never have existed in the first place. Micro USB isn't great, but it's still better than Lightning. And now that USB-C exists there is ZERO excuse for Apple to keep using that idiotic proprietary connector.
why not just transfer it via airdrop/bluetooth?
They will probably replace the Lightning port with a USB-C port in this year's iPhones, then. They already have a Lightning to USB-C cable so you'll be able to transfer data over a wire from your old iPhone to the new one. Going forward, once you have two 2019 or newer iPhones, you can just use any USB-C to USB-C cable, which are readily available. That makes more sense than Apple developing a Lightning to Lightning cable specifically for this purpose.
