I'm trying to update my iphone 7+ with the latest available ios 13 update.

Previously it was running on ios 11.

It is currently in the "installation" part of the update and the bar seems to be at the very end (or at least extremely near to it), but it has remained there for about 2 1/2 hours now.

Never had an update last so long before. I do have a lot of files on my iphone - don't know if this matters for the update process.

Is this normal? If not, would appreciate any suggestions for troubleshooting.

Thanks for your help.

Thanks. I found this on that page: "If the update or restore never completes or your device is unresponsive, force your device to restart. "

So I did force restart the device. It then booted up and asked me to "press home to upgrade." White screen with black apple logo. It sat there for awhile, then got the black screen with spinning circle.

Apparently device rebooted then and now I'm stuck on the apple logo screen. Device feels cool to the touch, so doesn't seem to be any activity.

Have you followed the steps here?

Ok I just tried again and this time something different happened:

got the "press home to upgrade" msg then the white screen with black apple. but this time there is a progress bar there which is gradually filling.

hopefully i'm in luck!

well, no luck.

I do have that new progress bar there, but it's stuck too.

guess I shouldn't have updated. I did read some posts here and there about people bricking their phones when updating to ios 13 but assumed those must be flukes.

I will try taking it into an apple store and see what they say.

I'm a firm believer of the following maxim:
Updating an iPhone can be hazardous. If you feel you really need to update the OS, only do it twice. The first time is when the release hits .2 or .3 and the second time is in August when it's all done before next numerical version drops in September with the new iPhones.

Personally, I update iOS whenever a new version becomes available.

The bigger the difference in versioning, the more likely you'll encounter problems. For example, there's probably a lot more testing for iOS 11.4 to 12.0 than there is for iOS 8 to 12.

I stopped jumping into upgrades once my iPad got soft bricked going from 12.4 to 13.1. It required a DFU mode upgrade, so full wipe.

I had to do it because I wanted the Disney+ app.
