Just a random comment.. I can't even imagine all of the servers placed around the world to handle so many iMessages, video calls, voip calls each minute of the day. Yet.. Apple made iMessage so reliable, secure and almost an industry norm.

But WHY has this been limited to 720p so far? The hardware/camera is the same obviously and the internet connection speed isn't the bottleneck now nor was it 3 years ago.
Apple could have used that for marketing all those years. I don't quite understand that...
Apple‘s server costs. In some cases FaceTime calls need to be routed though Apple if P2P ports are blocked.

I think this is more of a concession to the carriers (similar to those download size limits for things like apps). Any LTE phone might have enough bandwidth but that doesn't mean that every LTE tower/cell has no bandwidth limits serving all phones that connect to them. With 5G, the bandwidth of each tower/cell is much higher.

It's still an artificial restriction but not one primarily designed to cell new phones but to keep the carriers 'promoting' iPhones.
I don't know, in this case I would say the carriers made their own beds on this by offering unlimited data again.

Is iMessage an industry norm outside of the US?

but the forum keeps talking about PlAnNeD ObSoLesCenCe

there is no planned obsolescence. apple throttled to prevent shutdowns due to aging batteries. end of story.

Apple also communicated it poorly to consumers who were already suspicious of plan obsolescence.

yes. Apple botched the communication.

i believe iOS 10.2.1 was released around the time when Note 7 devices were exploding so possibly Apple’s PR team didn’t want iPhone battery issues to be scrutinized.

But why doesn’t the iPhone XR (and maybe also other iPhones) supports it over 4G? Don’t tell me 4G is to slow for 1080p streaming.
because 0 iPhones support it over 4G.....the 12 series needs to be on 5G for it to work. 4G towers don't really have enough bandwidth to accommodate the higher data transfer. Also, video calls are also different from streaming and requires more data being uploaded and downloaded simultaneously. it's the same reason there are download limits over 4G, requested by carriers themselves, but are totally allowed over 5G.
If the carriers allowed it, then I'm sure Apple would.

Sure, but how they got into this dilemma doesn’t change the fact that it is the carriers that have lobbied Apple (and other vendors) to put in those limits, from app sizes over tethering restrictions to video chat limitations. This isn’t Apple trying to sell new phones, this is the carriers trying to limit the amount of data their LTE cells have to deal with.

Industry norm is the wrong term, more like the system against which you have to measure your services, or if you want, the gold standard (and I know not everybody will agree with that but if one wanted to argue for it that would the phrase to use).

According to the Apple website, the 7Plus has the same front camera specs as the 8Plus, yet 1080 Facetime is not enabled on the 7Plus.

Well, you're probably right, but that's still ridiculous.
Not only do we have data caps and other limitations, but we also get limited on what we do with our limited data (we actually pay for).
Also: All the other video chat and streaming softwares probably don't care about that.

Sorry, but that sounds like artificial limitation for not good reason.

Headaches? Just use your device un unlock... simply as staring at it. The issue today is facemask but iOS ask for code immediately because it detects facemask.

Ikir, I meant that the Face ID scanners actually give me some kind of real headache, my eyes don't like it for some reason. Face ID works well, but I had to turn it off and use PIN unlock, and I no longer get headaches and pressure in my eyes.

No it is very necessary. In more dense populated areas, when everyone tries to connect to a tower, everyone gets slowed down. It only has so much bandwidth. If it were allowed it would cause lower quality service for everyone much faster. This is why providers are pushing forward on 5G because it can handle dealing out more bandwidth per customer. Also, most video conferencing applications compress and deliver 720p even on high speed WiFi

Because most plans out there have some form of data capping? Like, I'm on a current Verizon plan with unlimited data. However, if I use more than 22GB in a month, my data speeds get throttled down to 3G levels (not that 3G still isn't plenty for a phone) for the rest of the month. Pretty sure all other US carriers are similar in this regard. Wouldn't surprise me if most other nation's carriers operated that way as well.

Thanks but I'll keep using Google Duo now that I've discovered how CRAZY the video and sound quality is. Best quality by FAR over facetime whatsapp messenger etc

Data capping also applies when using 5G. At least here.

But I understood that this is not a technical reason but just to please the US carriers.

Anyway, I’m sure that 1080p on the front facing camera doesn’t look much better than 720p. And if you FaceTime with someone who’s also on an iPhone, the screen is so tiny that 720p is enough.

If I had to guess, carriers didn’t want to have to deal with the bandwidth. It wasn’t until more recently that you could download more than 200 MB to update an app via cellular, and that ABSOLUTELY wasn’t a limitation of the OS :)
