The iOS 14.5 beta update that was released today introduces support for the latest gaming controllers from Sony and Microsoft, allowing the PS5 DualSense controller and the Xbox Series X controller to be used with iPhones and iPads.

An earlier iOS 14 beta suggested that support for the updated controllers was in the works, but it will go live in iOS 14.5. It's also likely that the accompanying tvOS update, tvOS 14.5, is gaining support for the controllers.

Apple Arcade games and other iOS games that support controllers will be compatible with the PS5 DualSense and Xbox Series X controller options. iOS 14.5 is limited to developers at the current time, but Apple will likely have a public beta coming soon, with the update set to be released in the early spring.

I was just about to give up and buy a Xbox One controller YESTERDAY. Time to opt back into the Beta for a bit.

Hopefully it makes its way to tvOS soon as well.

Edit: I also might finally nab one of those controller clips from Best Buy next time they're on sale.

This is great news.

Hopefully it makes its way to tvOS soon as well.

I've got to believe it'll be included in tvOS 14.5 and might be present in the beta already. Apple currently supports the same controllers on all devices according to their support page:

And I imagine they will want to keep it that way to avoid confusion.

Edit: it is indeed working in the tvOS 14.5 beta:

I'm also wondering this.
Having had much history with both companies, I would guess this comes down to general apathy from both parties. I don’t see Nintendo actively trying to prevent their Pro controller from being used like this. I also don’t see Nintendo reaching out to establish these relationships with Apple, however simple that may be.

I've only felt it in Astro's Playroom (currently playing through the PS Collection which doesn't support the fancy controller stuff) but the stuff in Astro's is insane.

the music in astros playroom in insanely good

cooling springs music, memory meadows to name a few

and also that game is where I tried the haptic feedback from PS5 controller and it’s something XBOX should learn from

Very good news. I just need to find a bona fide retailer that sells the PS5 or the XBOX Series X. 🙄
